This weekend the beautiful, autumnal trees and weather were the perfect backdrop for ‘The Great Tiddington and Alveston Scarecrow Festival’.
The brain child of Alveston C of E Primary School parent Becci Middel, the Friends of Alveston organised this successful, COVID-friendly fundraiser for the school. For a donation of £5, local residents produced and displayed a creative range of scarecrows in their gardens. The children of Alveston C of E Primary also produced several class scarecrows, including two scary pupils, colourful Wendy and a convincing ‘Scare’s Wally?’
Throughout the weekend visitors from Tiddington, Alveston and beyond, purchased maps and voting cards and toured the properties of the neighbouring streets to find their favourite scarecrow. Parents, children, staff and residents all agreed it was a wonderful community project which left everyone with a warm glow.
Raising over £500 for the school, it was also a very successful fundraising project! The Friends of Alveston work hard all year planning, organising and delivering fun events. The money raised by these events has not only provided school pupils with extra treats to enrich their educational experience – such as contributions to last year’s first ever whole-school Christmas Theatre visit or donations towards class trips to help keep the cost to parents down - but also funding important programmes and resources to support the school’s teaching and learning. For example purchasing iPAds and making donations towards reading programmes for children aged 4 to 11. As a direct result of the pandemic schools have seen rising costs and a fall in income from lettings, so an additional £500 was note only a triumph but also very welcome!
The Great Tiddington and Alveston Scarecrow Festival has proven that even in these difficult times, we can continue to come together as a community, generate positive community spirit and much needed funds for school whilst following government guidance and keeping our community safe.
The Alveston C of E Primary School and The Friends of Alveston would like to thank everyone involved for their all efforts in making this such a delightful addition to the calendar! Thanks too to all the Friends who supported the organisation of the event, including selling the maps and handling the votes on the day.
The Friends of Alveston have set up a COVID-friendly ‘just giving page’ for anyone who was unable to join in this year but would like to send a donation.
