With this historic occasion, the first Coronation in my lifetime, we wanted to give our children a moment to remember. We also wanted to share this moment with as many family members as possible. To do this, it had to be an outdoor performance. We were clear, as we were with the Jubilee last year, we would go ahead rain or shine!
Setting up outside proved a challenge before anyone even arrived! With two tropical downpours, which of course held off until we had the very last bunting, chairs and groundsheets in place, meant we were mopping and drying right up to the start! When the rain returned for the performance itself, we needn't have worried, we are British! Everyone demonstrated the best British value of all - true grit!
I think you'll agree that the festive bunting really helped set the mood and definitely made the school look celebration ready! Warwickshire County Council, in partnership with the Lord Lieutenant, Tim Cox, kindly provided the school with 10m of red, white and blue bunting to help Alveston C of E Primary celebrate the Coronations of the King and Queen Consort. Alongside this, the fantastic knitted bunting was very kindly donated to us by a local farming charity based in Barford, called the Addington Fund. They recently launched a campaign to help schools across Warwickshire brighten up their Coronation celebrations by donating lengths (and lengths!) of brightly coloured hand-knitted bunting. (If you would like to purchase some bunting of your own, while supporting an amazing local charity, you can find more details here).
The children's performance plotted the story of King Charles's journey to the throne, from birth to current day. Each class told part of his story to date and thoroughly entertained us. True professionals 'til the end, they didn't let the thunder claps put them off!
As a memento of this historic day, the children have been given a colour copy of the story that connected their performances together, along with a beautiful Coronation Medallion to commemorate this once-in-a-lifetime occasion. The medallions, funded by Stratford Town Council, were very kindly presented to the school by Stratford-upon-Avon Mayor, Councillor Gill Cleeve.
Our wonderful Friends of Alveston added to the occasion with a creative Coronation Cake Competition and providing hot drinks, cakes and gorgeous cream teas to our families. There was red, white and blue a-plenty amongst our baked show-pieces.
The competition cakes were expertly judged by Y6 pupils. Congratulations to
- 1st Harry (Y2) and Georgia (Reception)
- 2nd Elsie (Y5)
- 3rd Liam (Y2)
Our winning cake from Harry and Georgia, was such a show stopper, we couldn't bear to cut it to sell, so raffled it instead! Well done to Mrs Bodfish, who went home with this wonderful Coronation cake.
Thank you to the whole team for supporting us and to all those who made cakes and scones for the Friends to sell. They raised a total of £405 - thank you to everyone who bought a slice or two of cake!
Finally, thank you to everyone who took part in creating this moment for our children. Whether you performed with your class, helped your children to learn their lines, worked to put it all together or set up, joined us to share the experience, baked wonderful produce for the café, sold drinks and cake to our visitors, we could not have delivered this wonderful moment without you!
Thanks to the weather, this memory will be cemented in our minds forever!
