14th March 2025

This week, we have celebrated British Science Week with an incredible array of activities for the children: from Formula One fascinating us with car parts weighing just 2kg, to seeing a cloud in a bottle from the Met Office, to first hand farming experiences and the crash-testing cars with Aston Martin  - there has been so much going on! It’s amazing to see the children’s curiosity grow in front of our eyes as they learn about these different things (I think the adults have been mesmerised too). This wouldn’t have been possible this week without support from our awesome families - thank you to those of you who came in to share your job and your passion with our children. And a huge thank you to Mrs Rogers who has organised it. This week will definitely be remembered by our children. Next week we'll share more details about everything that happened in Science Week

Have a lovely weekend

Keeping Children Safe

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of some really important safety reminders.

Playground
Please ensure younger siblings stay with parents on the playground at the end of the day. Children are not allowed to play on the equipment around the playground after school or once they have finished Owls.

Dogs
Lots of parents bring their dogs with them for the walk to school. If you do, please ensure they are under control and stay right away from the gate. We have some children in school with a huge fear of dogs and we don't want them to be distressed before the day begins.

Clubs
All school-led clubs finish at 4.15 and pick-up is at the football club gate. Staff will always hand the children over to the collecting adult. If you are collecting a child from Owls, please then head back out of school grounds and along Knights Lane around to the gate, to collect children from clubs. Please do not wait inside the gates as we have children in the school grounds who we still need to safeguard at all times.
British Science Week - Sneak Peek!

Check back next week for a summary of what every year group got stuck into during British Science Week 2025. In the meantime, here's a little taster of some of what went on around Alveston Primary this week:

Year 4 and Year 5 were visited by Mrs Eagle, Jamie's Mummy, who is a MET office expert! She spoke to the children about her job coding for the supercomputer at the MET office and how weather data is collected and analysed (and brought in examples).  She shared so many fascinating facts, including the fact that 14 thousand trillion calculations are made by the supercomputer EVERY SECOND! What a fascinating afternoon.

The Year 4 and Year 5 children were also visited by Mr Potter to discuss his role as an engineer. He then challenged Year 4 with the task of designing a safe car to protect a passenger (Eggbert the Egg). The children had the opportunity to create, test, and refine their designs, much like the engineers at Aston Martin. They had so much fun, and many of them are now inspired to become engineers of the future!
Fire Safety

Year 5 had a very interesting Fire Safety session with Warwickshire Fire Service this week. They learnt all about how to spot fire hazards within the home, ways to ensure that your family stays safe and what actions should take place in the event of a fire.
Education Through Drama

Year 4 were visited on Wednesday by LoudMouth who deliver important safety messages through theatre. They reviewed our key PSHE messages through drama and a discussion-based workshop. The children became experts at the NSPCC s ‘PANTS’ acronym. We ended the session with a reminder for the children about trusted adults and "network hands" should the children want to discuss anything that is worrying them.
Ding-a-Ling! Everybody on the Bicycle Bus!

What a fantastic Bicycle Bus last week! There were 18 bikers in total, nearly doubling the 10 maiden voyagers the week before. The Bicycle Bus riders experimented with a different route which was a bit more meandering but it ensured that the children avoided the main roads for longer. Click here to see the route the bikers took. The ride totalled 2 miles - what a lovely way to start the day! Well done, Bicycle Bus!

General Reminders

Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane, Oak Road or any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message.  You may also email parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday).

Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer.  Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via:

parents3002@welearn365.com
