News

4th November 2022

Now back from our half term break, it is always amazing to see how early Christmas begins to arrive in the shops. Although once a retailer myself, I do believe it gets earlier every year! Aside from the shelves groaning with Christmas products, most of us have our own little tradition that signifies the start of the run up to Christmas and the birth of Jesus. One of those for us in school, apart from Mrs Newitt sporting her Christmas jumper, is the arrival of Shoebox Bob and the official launch of the annual Teams4U shoe box appeal. We haven’t been able to have Bob in school for 3 years – and how we have missed him! On Thursday, Bob returned to lead our Collective Worship and remind our children about the charity and the work they do. He gave them top tips for filling a shoe box present and shared many stories of the children who receive the boxes.

Bob is passionate about the work Teams4U do and he works hard to promote the charity in the UK, as well as travelling with the boxes and handing them to vulnerable children who live in the most deprived conditions. This year shoe boxes will be sent to Ukraine, Romania, Moldova and Georgia to name just a few countries the charity support. As this is one of the two charities we are actively supporting this year, we will set our target at 100 shoe boxes. For more information on how you can help, please see below. Please do help us to send as many boxes as we can – they really do deliver sunshine and hope to so many in need.

If you were wondering how accurate Shoebox Bob’s arrival is as a predictor to the official run up to Christmas, we had another visitor on Thursday evening! Bob Robin, a jolly Robin Redbreast, as bold and as bright as he could be, joined us in school to seal the deal! This reminds me of my grandmother’s favourite phrase ‘If the Lord don’t come, he’ll send!’ Let’s look forward to this fabulous half term with hope and with joy.

With very best wishes,

Anne Clewley

Shoebox Appeal Official Alveston Launch

Each year, the school supports the Teams4U nationwide shoebox appeal to provide Christmas gifts to vulnerable children and families, who otherwise would be left with nothing this Christmas. With your help, we would like to support the appeal again.

Please be a part of this ongoing story that is continuing to impact and change lives, by donating a filled shoebox to this year’s appeal!

We have got some shoe boxes in school, wrapped and ready to be filled. Please do pop in at the end of the day to collect a box if you need one. First come, first served!

For guidance on what to put in the box and how to label, please go to the teams4u website:

https://teams4u.com/shoebox-guide/

Thank you so much for your support!

School Poetry Day

On Monday 14th November our school will enjoy a Poetry Day with Andy Tooze!

Andy is a poet and specialist poetry teacher from Derbyshire.  Prior to working as a full time poet he was a primary school teacher!

Andy will engage the whole school with both an introductory and celebratory assembly. He will visit each class in turn to run dynamic and interactive poetry workshops.

Parents and children can read some sample poems from each of Andy's three most recent books by clicking on the image of the relevant front page on the 'Books' page of Andy's website here

Signed copies of Andy's books, 'Green Shoots Rising', 'The Poetry Bug' and 'The Poetry Bug Strikes Again' (which you can purchase at all good bookstores) will be available to purchase on the day for the discounted amount of £5 each.

Thank you to the Friends of Alveston for funding this exciting day for our children.

Friends of Alveston Event Update  –  ** Bag2School**

We are pleased to announce that there will be a clothing & shoe collection with Bag2School, at morning drop-off on Friday 18th November, in order to raise much needed funds for Friends of Alveston. As well as raising vitally needed funds for Friends, it also helps the environment by helping to divert unwanted textiles away from landfill.

Hopefully you will have received your Bag2School leaflets in your child’s book bag.

This is the perfect time for a pre-Christmas clear-out and to get rid of any summer bits cluttering up your wardrobes that you may not need anymore. If you have any items that you are able to get rid of, please pop them in a bin bag and attach the leaflet to the bag. Items can include adults’ and children’s clothes, shoes (tied together please), belts, handbags and soft toys. The leaflet gives more information but you can also refer to the website here for further detail.

There is no limit on the number of bags so if you are having a massive clear-out, we can accept all the bags!

Please note duvets, pillows and work or school uniform with logos are not accepted.

Most importantly - THE HEAVIER THE BETTER!!!

Community Interest

We post all community events and projects on our website under 'Our Community'. For more information about activities open to you and your family, please do check the page regularly. This week we have added some information regarding some exciting events in our area and some useful resources for parents:

Parent Meeting: Emotional Regulation This year we have continued our work to help children to understand their feelings and behaviours. This includes what might trigger certain feelings and behaviours, how to regulate their emotions, understanding the impact their actions may have on others and how to repair relationships when things go wrong. We have introduced some new approaches to support this work. These include:  Emotion Coaching, Zones of Regulation - which we have just started introducing to the children - and Restorative Practice - introduced in spring 2022

We would like to invite all our parents and carers to a meeting on Thursday 24th November at 3.30pm, to share the approaches and strategies we are teaching the children. We hope that sharing these strategies with our families will benefit our community as a whole.

For those parents attending the meeting, we will be offering childcare for school age children. We will sadly not be able to provide childcare for pre-school children. You may however bring younger siblings with you on the understanding that if your child becomes restless, you will leave the meeting so not to disturb others.

If you would like to join us to learn more, please see the message sent via the eschools app and complete the attached form to confirm your attendance. We will then be able to ensure we have the right number of seats for you and adult supervision for your children.   We would love to see as many of you as possible to continue to work together on this important topic for our children.

Anti-bullying week ~ this week is anti-bullying week and the theme for this year's campaign is ‘Reach Out’. Whether it’s in school, at home, in the community or online, you can reach out and support one another! Find links to fun and engaging activities within this resource.

General Reminders

Parking at Drop Off and Pick Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop off and pick up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane or Oak Road for pick up or drops offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic resuming and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

The car park is safer for pedestrians as well as families loading and unloading into cars. Parents have reported an increase in cars parked on Oak Road and many cars have parked on double yellow lines. Please be considerate to the safety of all. Thank you.
