English

At Alveston, we value the written and spoken word. We are all Orators, Authors and Critics!

English has a pre-eminent place in education and in society. A high-quality education in English will teach children to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others and through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them.

Through reading in particular, children have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. Literature, especially, plays a key role in such development. Reading also enables pupils both to acquire knowledge and to build on what they already know.

All the skills of language are essential to participating fully as a member of society; children, who learn to speak, read and write fluently and confidently can contribute to and benefit from everything our society has to offer.

Writing for different audiences and purposes is an important part of the writing curriculum.

For example, Year 6 were tasked with writing an explanation text about the circulatory system for their Reception buddy. They had to think carefully about using simple language and presenting it in a clear and fun way to engage their young reader. As can be seen in the photographs, they did a fantastic job and the writing was very well received!
