British Science Week

We have so many talented parents in school who come from a Science background and we were able to utilise their expertise to provide a range of activities across the week. Thank you to all parents who gave up time to support Science week.  You can read all about the amazing things we got up to, below:

Reception through to Year 5 met Mrs Eagle from the MET Office. She provided a fascinating presentation about the importance of predicting weather and how the MET Office have an impact on our daily lives. The children cheered and gasped during her cloud in the bottle experiment. You can find more detail about Mrs Eagle's visit in the Year 4 and 5 sections.

Year 1 performed an experiment using a zip-lock bag, pencils and water. They made predictions before the experiment, stating that the water would leak out of the bag as a pencil was pushed through it. However, this was not the case and the water stayed inside the bag. This was because plastics are polymers - a long chain of plastic molecules that stick together. The polymers formed a seal around the pencil so the water didn't leak out. Only when the pencils are removed will the water begin to leak out. Fascinating!

Year 1 and Reception also had a fantastic time learning all about farming with Mr and Mrs White. The children had so many questions and were absolutely fascinated by drone footage of the animals on the farm.

Year 2 investigated which material was best for staying safe and seen in the dark. They used a range of materials in the pitch black art cupboard with torches.

Year 2 and Year 3 had an introduction to all things Formula 1 from Mr Williams, who works for Mercedes. He talked about the different materials used on FI cars and even brought a whole side of a car into school!

Year 4 and Year 5 were visited by Mrs Eagle, Jamie's Mummy, who is a MET office expert! She spoke to the children about her job coding for the supercomputer at the MET office and how weather data is collected and analysed (and brought in examples).  She shared so many fascinating facts, including the fact that 14 thousand trillion calculations are made by the supercomputer EVERY SECOND! What a fascinating afternoon.

The Year 4 and Year 5 children were also visited by Mr Potter to discuss his role as an engineer. He then challenged Year 4 with the task of designing a safe car to protect a passenger (Eggbert the Egg). The children had the opportunity to create, test, and refine their designs, much like the engineers at Aston Martin. They had so much fun, and many of them are now inspired to become engineers of the future!

Year 6 visited Stratford upon Avon School and had the opportunity to work with Ms Denly, who teaches Science. The children had two lessons; one on using microscopes and one on animal adaptations. They also had the opportunity to work in a Science Laboratory.

Alongside all the fantastic opportunities from parents, the teachers in school made Science week inspirational too. Teachers introduced the children to their favourite science experiment and a famous scientist. We looked at the "Smashing Stereotypes" campaign by the British Science Association and how a career in Science can be open to all pupils as they get older. We also went invention-crazy and had an in-school competition to design our best inventions that could possibly change the world one day! Mrs Rogers and the School Council will judge the entries and winners will be announced in Shine assembly soon.

What a fascinating and inspiring week!
