What a difference the summer weather has made to our last week of the half term! Walking around school, at any time of day, you can feel the spirits of our children and staff soaring in appreciation of the sun shining upon us, the warmth on our skin and the sheer joy of playing on the school field!
This week has been an exciting one for our children. Aside from the glorious weather and the sense of freedom the playing field brings, three classes have been out and about, taking part in school trips to further enrich their learning. Our children travelled near and far, to Stratford, Birmingham and London and some took part in a netball tournament too. We also welcomed an author to school, Tim Tilley, to work with our Year 5 and 6 children.
The week was been jammed packed with experiences and rich with additional learning. Sometimes, what can get lost in all of this is the efforts and the kindness of others who make it all possible. I would therefore like to take a moment to thank all those who have given their time this week to make it an extraordinary one for so many. In particular, our teachers for giving up their own time to plan, organise and attend some amazing events; our office staff for all the organisation and communication; our parents and teaching assistants for helping us to make it all possible; our PCSO, Dom, for helping to keep our children safe on their way to and from school; Mr Zahawi for taking time out of his day to spend with our children and answer their insightful questions and Annie Ashworth and Tim Tilley for surprising us with a wonderful gift of their time. Last, but by no means least, our amazing children for bringing their best, shining so brightly and making us prouder than we can ever truly express.
Whatever you are doing this week, I wish you a peaceful, restful and sunshine filled break! I look forward to welcoming you all back to school on Monday 5th June.

There's More to Life at Sealife!
 
This week, Year 2 visited The Sealife Centre in Birmingham! We were very excited when our coach arrived and we enjoyed seeing landmarks like Aston Villa Football Stadium on the journey. When we arrived in Birmingham, we had a snack in Brindley Place before entering the Sealife Centre. Inside, we enjoyed interacting with the penguins and watched the Aquarium staff patiently feed them. After eating our lunch, we were able to touch a starfish and watched in awe as a shark and stingray swam over our heads in the Ocean Tunnel. We loved our school trip and are now writing a recount about our adventure.
Ayes to the Right, Noes to the Left
 
Year 6 enjoyed a Westminster Walkabout this week. For some it was their first trip to London and for others (including me!) it was their first visit inside the Houses of Parliament. Read more about their exciting day and to see more photos following this link Year 6 - Westminster Walkabout
Match Report! 
 
On Monday, our fledgling Year 5/6 Netball Team took part in their first tournament against 8 other Stratford School teams at Stratford High. Understandably, having never competed together before, it took the first match against Bridgetown to really find our feet but we quickly co-ordinated and found our form, going on to win the second match against Thomas Jolyffe and only losing our third match against Stratford Prep by the slenderest of margins. The team fought well and set up some great match play to result in a total of 5 points at the end of the group stage.  Although not enough to proceed to the semi finals this time, we secured 5th place overall. A fantastic achievement, we are very proud of you!
Well done to Annabelle, Beatrice, Bella, Chloe, Elsie, Evie, Frankie, Freya, Isabella, Izzy, Jasmine, Joey, Millie, Olivia and Ruben. Thanks also go to the staff and pupils of Stratford High PE department for hosting such a great event!
Accelerated Readers are a-Zooming!
 
As part of the Accelerated Reader Program that Alveston adopts, the aim is for children to have read a minimum of 8 books by this point in the year. We are very excited to report that we have many pupils whom have gone above and beyond this number!

Meet Your Local PCSO...
                                                                                      ...Dominic Bas-Jeary!
PCSOs, or Police Community Support Officers, work within neighbourhood policing teams helping to solve local issues by getting out in the community, meeting people and offering advice and support to people who live and work in the neighbourhood. And this is exactly what Dom did this week! Dom very kindly provided his time and presence to ensure that the roads, streets and pedestrian paths outside Alveston Primary are hazard-free, unobstructed and a safe place to be for our children, parents and local residents.

Summer Hat Pop-Up Shop!
 

First the beautiful bobble hats....now the sensational summer caps have arrived! Don't they look fabulous? There are three different types of cap available - ranging from £9.99-£11.99 - with plain, varsity and gold glitter styles to choose from.  

This week, one of our Year 3 parents hosted a pop-up shop in the playground, after school. Children were able to try the hats on for size and parents could then order them from the shop to be made over half-term. If you missed it, do not despair! Simply email support@haube.co.uk and you will be contacted from there. 

As with the winter beanies, we are delighted to offer these hats as an optional part of our uniform. However, please note that there is no obligation to buy.

We post all community events and projects on our website under 'Our Community'. For more information about activities open to you and your family, please do check the page regularly.  
 
ArMUDgeddon ~ is a local family Mud Run organised by and in support of local Scout Groups. They have events in June and September for children ages 4-17. See what's going on here.
 
Chess Tournament at Stratford Library ~ every Friday after school, from the 9th June to the 14th July, Stratford library will be holding a chess tournament for children aged 7-11yrs. All the details on how to sign up can be found on the poster here. 
 
CBBC Casting Call for "Style It Out"! ~ calling all young designers aged 10-14! Lion TV are searching for the style icons and fashion designers of the future to star in a brand-new challenge show on CBBC & BBC iPlayer. "Skills and More" Activity Camps ~ take a look here for details about some exciting activity camps taking place during the May half-term holidays. Primary school-aged children are welcomed to the Central Ajax Stadium in Warwick for football, drama, cookery and more! (Childcare vouchers are now accepted).

The May edition of the Connect for Health school nursing service magazine can be found under the "Our Community" section of our website. This edition focuses on stress management for pupils who are completing exams. You will find links to useful websites and suggested activities to relieve stress for young people. Also, find out about Sun Awareness Week 2023 and good hand hygiene.

Music lessons in school

Coronavirus within school
If your child tests positive for coronavirus, or has one or more of: temperature, continuous cough, loss of sense of smell or taste, please keep them off school for a minimum of three days or until they are better after three days.  Please report all absences to the school office as below.
 
Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412 and leaving a message.  You may also email parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick. Absences for sickness will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday) nor for COVID absences.  

Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer.  Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form: parents3002@welearn365.com.

Naming Items in school
Please ensure any items brought into school are named so they can be returned to your child if misplaced.  This includes uniform, water bottles, snack and lunch boxes, etc.
