This week, Year 6 were visited by 'Warwickshire Safe and Active Schools' for a Road Safety presentation about Impulse Control.
Impulse control can be seen as a person’s ability to offset immediate reward for larger but later reward.
Most Year 6 pupils know basic Road Safety skills, but they often fail to deploy these skills because:
• They react on impulse.
• They go for a short-term gain rather than a long-term safety gain.
Our learning objectives were to:
• Identify types of impulsive behaviour.
• Recognise the motivations for impulsive behaviour.
• Recognise situations where it may be more difficult to control impulses.
• Have appropriate coping strategies to reduce all types of impulsive behaviour.
Impulse control is associated with a number of Road Safety behaviours including:
• Distractions including mobile phone use and use of headphones.
• Peer situations including walking and seeing friends.
• Time pressure and the importance of planning.
• Poor decision making such as crossing the road when the red man is showing.
As many of these issues are particularly relevant to transition, it is a timely and relevant message for our Year 6 children.
