News

6th October 2023

I hope when you read this, whatever you are doing, you are basking in glorious sunshine! What a wonderful autumn we are having. The weather certainly keeps that summer spring in our steps and we have had a super exciting week in school! I think the highlight of the week for many, including the teachers, was the session all the children took part in with Rachel Winters. Rachel is running a new, fabulous drama club for us and you can find more details below.
We have been working for some time on increasing the number and breadth of clubs we offer and where possible asking some of the best coaches to deliver them. As you know Tom is working wonders with our footballers in Key Stage 2, Mrs Fielding is continuing with her gardening club and Madame Pillon is all about French! We have also secured Molly, an experienced netball coach and umpire from Stratford's very own Thunderbirds, to run professional netball coaching and develop our team for competitions. As we welcome back our tennis coach for Key Stage 1 and Simon offering Key Stage 1 football, we are delighted to see the club offer expand once again. In the future we are hoping to introduce fencing too, so keep your eyes peeled! We will continue to expand the breadth of offer, to help every child find and excel at their passion, whilst working with all our new club professionals to ensure we find the best offer for the children and you. If there is a club you would like to see at school please do let us know!
This newsletter is choc full of exciting news, so sit back, relax and read on!
Wishing you the sunniest of weekends,
Anne Clewley

House Point Cup Winners!

Congratulations to Tudor Reds!

Reception class learnt all about the story, Owl Babies. They then sequenced the life cycle of an owl and drew and painted their own Owl Babies. This is my favourite story which I loved reading to my little girl, so it is lovely to see it alive in the classroom - great work, Reception!
Lest We Forget

This week, Year 6 were visited by Mr Harrison for a World War II talk. Mr Harrison shared his experiences of growing up during the war and what it was like for him to be evacuated to Herefordshire. It was wonderful for the children to meet and speak with someone who has first-hand knowledge of living through World War II. The children asked informative questions and were kind and respectful. Thank you Mr Harrison for taking the time to visit us.

Coats at the Ready!

So far this autumn the temperatures have been wonderfully warm and we are set for another lovely weekend.
To this point, children have not all needed their Alveston School coat. This is however set to change. To ensure our children can get the most out of their learning and to ensure they are always warm and dry, we would like all children to be back in their Alveston uniform coat everyday from Monday 16th October.
Exclusive Drama Club!

We are so lucky at Alveston to be able to offer you an exclusive drama club on offer from a very talented individual. See below for more information...
Shakespeare Drama Club

We are excited to announce that Rachel Winters is offering an after-school drama club that will be based on the works of William Shakespeare. Originally, the club was Key Stage 2 only but we are pleased to announce that the club is now open to children in Years 2-6! It will run from 3:15-4:15pm, in the school hall, every Friday until 15th December (with a break for half-term).

Throughout the term, the workshops will be exploring different drama games and exercises, along with working on scenes. The main aims of the sessions are to have fun, boost confidence and work on performance skills. The children will also work towards a short sharing for parents and carers at the end of term.

About Rachel:

Rachel’s credentials are extensive and impressive: Rachel trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London.

Rachel's theatre work includes A Christmas Carol (RSC); Much Ado About Nothing  and Macbeth (Shakespeare's Globe); The Woman in the Moon (Wanamaker Theatre); Babette's Feast (The Print Room); Sleeping Beauty (The Watermill); Dracula (UK tour); and As You Like It and The Comedy of Errors (Guildford Shakespeare Company).

TV/film credits include Borgia (Netflix/ Canal Plus); Doctors (BBC) and Vicious (the multi-award winning short horror film).

Rachel works as a visiting education practitioner at different organisations across the UK. At Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, she's delivered hundreds of workshops for young people. She's also a short course tutor at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, where she's a regular BA Acting audition panellist too.

Our guitar teacher, Tomm, told the office this week that he has had lots of children telling him that they want to learn guitar....and it just so happens that he has spaces available! Parents can apply for lessons via https://www.warwickshiremusichub.org and click 'Enrol Today.'  You can also email Tomm directly with any questions at tommwilliams@warwickshire.gov.uk.
** Secondary School Applications for 2024 **
Don't miss the 31 October Secondary School Application Deadline!

The parent portal opened on 1 September for Secondary 2024 applications (this applies only to children currently in Year 6).

All applications received by the deadline of 31 October will receive a school offer on 1 March next year, which is National Offer Day. Any applications submitted after the 31 October deadline will only be considered after this, which means that your child is much less likely to be offered a place at their  preferred school.

Applications should be made online at: https://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/applying-secondary-school-place where parents and carers can also find useful information on school transport, priority school areas and admissions criteria. To help you make your decisions, we also encourage you to visit those schools you are considering, if possible, and to use all the six preferences available to you so that you maximise your child’s chances of a place at one of their preferred schools.
