February 2025

14th February 2025

This week we have been thinking about our value of 'Community'.

Today, the children have loved coming into school dressed to 'Express Themselves'. We have seen lots of colour, vibrance and creativity as they have shown us their personality traits, the things they love and what they aspire towards. It's joyous to see how all of these individual streaks come together to make our school the community it is. This half term is always a long one - colder and darker - but the learning has been incredible, the fellowship between children and hearing laughter ringing through school can truly brighten even the darkest days.

Thank you for your feedback at Parents' Evening. We value your comments as we strive to make Alveston the best possible learning environment for all your children and we will take all feedback on board. We are currently working on our Whatsapp information groups, following feedback from last time. This will roll out after half term.

I hope you all have a wonderful half term break.

Around the World with Reception Class

Reception class ended their half term learning topic, "All Around the World", by creating their own class flag at Forest School. The children demonstrated incredible teamwork and cleverly assigned certain areas of the flag to represent different things. For example, they made a litter corner to highlight the importance of no littering and a line of bark to demonstrate their love of trees.
Love is in the Air

Last week, Year 2 had a love-ly time at Forest School! With Valentine's Day just around the corner, they made heart bird feeders by lacing cereals onto pipe cleaners and hanging them in the trees. Our resident robin watched and waited patiently for them to be hung. Toasting marshmallows on the fire warmed us all up as did several rounds of 'hot dog' tag!
Flying High

Back in the classroom, Year 2 have continued their learning around taking flight and have worked hard to create a timeline showing the stages of man's journey to taking to the sky.

Cook of the Antarctic

Year 5 were incredibly lucky to be visited by Mr Cook this week. He has been on many trips to Antarctica and spoke to us all about what he had seen and his inspiring experiences. We saw Antarctic photography from Mr Cook’s many explorations into this unique part of the world. It was fascinating to hear all about the journeys, the weather and the wildlife. Thank you Mr Cook for inspiring us with your stories and knowledge. We thoroughly enjoyed learning all about Antarctica in amazing detail and we thank you for spending time and sharing with us.
Eco Committee x Rags2Riches

Our Eco-Committee have been super busy in recent weeks. They are currently working on lots of projects but alongside this they are ensuring our school grounds are tidy by regularly litter picking and, this week, they met Rags2Riches. The children went out to support our clothing collection by helping to weigh in all the clothing. A fantastic 282kg of clothing were collected with all funds going to Alveston Primary.

Musical Theatre Club at Alveston!

Commencing Tuesday 4th March, Black Box Tuition are inviting children from both KS1 and KS2 to their musical theatre workshops, right here at Alveston Primary!

Black Box was founded in 2024 with the aim of building young people’s confidence through Vocal Tuition, Musical Theatre & Drama Clubs in Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Gloucestershire and The Cotswolds.

Taking into consideration the positive impact that the arts have on a child’s mental health, Black Box found that children who attend their classes not only find their voice through singing, but they build in confidence, expand their public speaking ability, hone their social skills, and respond positively to constructive feedback.

Why not take a look at their website for more information.

Half Term Fun with Warwickshire Libraries

Enjoy free dinosaur-themed activities and learn about superfoods this half-term at Warwickshire Libraries!

Warwickshire County Council’s libraries service is encouraging children and families to get involved in plenty of fun activities at their local library this February half-term.

The activities range from having a ‘roarsome’ time making dinosaur-themed crafts, to joining in with interactive "Taste and Create" sessions to become a food superhero. Regular children’s activities will also be continuing throughout the week including Lego Club, Rhyme Time and the Books Bears scheme.

For those aged 4-11 years, many libraries across the county are offering free sessions for children to have plenty of fun creating dinosaur-themed crafts, which they can take home afterwards to enjoy. All of the materials for the craft sessions will be provided. The drop-in sessions are happening at multiple library locations and at different times so that as many children as possible can attend. Find the nearest session on the Warwickshire Libraries February Half-Term Eventbrite webpage.

In addition to crafts, Rugby Library will also be hosting a stop motion animation session for 6-12 year olds on Thursday 20 February. Children will be able to choose a stop motion backdrop and fill it with plenty of dinosaur- themed movement and activity! Places will be available to book from Friday 14 February on the Stop-Motion Dinosaurs at Rugby Library webpage.

Has your child ever dreamed of having superpowers? Then they may also enjoy Warwickshire Libraries interactive Taste and Create workshops to become a Food Superhero

Taking place at libraries across the county and Market Hall Museum, children aged 4-11 years can dive into the world of superfoods, where they can play games, get crafty, and handle and taste different food items to discover how superfoods can help them be their best selves. Each one-hour long workshop is packed with fun and interactive activities to conquer food-themed challenges, and all children that attend the workshops will receive their very own goodie bag.

To book a place, visit the Taste and Create Eventbrite webpage. Please note all participants will be sent a form to complete after booking to notify staff of any food allergies or dietary requirements.

Warwickshire Libraries will also be hosting a number of fun events and activities for pre-school and school aged children, including Rhyme Time, Story Stomp, and Lego Club. To find out which activities are happening at your local library this half-term and how to book, visit www.warwickshire.gov.uk/childrensactivities.

For younger children there is also the opportunity to get involved in the free Warwickshire Book Bears scheme. Children under five collect a stamp every time they visit the library, and after six stamps they earn a certificate. If they collect all ten certificates, then they will receive a Library Book Bear soft toy as a reward. To find out more you can ask about the Books Bears scheme at your local library.

General Reminders

Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane, Oak Road or any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message.  You may also email parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday) nor for COVID absences.

Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer.  Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via:
