Last Sunday, 10th October was World Mental Health Day.
This was a good place to start our Collective Worship theme this week of Honesty.
We discussed that when we are honest with ourselves and others, when we our truthful, it can give us one less thing to worry about!
The Buddha said: "Three things cannot long be hidden: the sun, the moon and the truth."
Before people give evidence in a court of law, they are invited to hold a bible and say the words "I promise before Almighty God that the evidence which I shall give shall be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth." In other words, they promise to say only what they know to be true, not to repeat gossip and not to exaggerate or miss bits out.
We compared being in the dark to telling the truth. When we are in the dark, it is difficult to know how things really look, but when we put the light on, it reveals the objects in a room or street clearly. We discussed that when courts, like adults in school, are trying to unpick what has happened, it can be really tricky if they don't hear the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth - it is just like being in the dark!
Jesus said "I am the light of the world." John 8.12
When someone is honest and tells the truth it is as if the light has been switched on and things are clearer to see. When things happen in school, if someone tries to hide the truth it becomes confusing and harder to work out what is real and what is true. As a result, we are in the dark. We rely on everyone to be honest so we can help.
We thought about a time when we had not been honest. Perhaps we had said we hadn't done something, when we did, or we left out some of the truth. We thought about how we had felt. Not telling the truth often gives us our 'early warning signs', but telling the truth, being honest to ourselves and others, can feel like a relief and we can be at peace and be calm again.
In our prayer, we asked Jesus the light of the world to help us shine as lights, to be honest, truthful and open in all that we do.
Our children can lead the way within their community and play their part in bringing honesty and light to our world.
