News

22nd November 2024

Wow! What an exciting week! Nothing says 'winter' like snow and just that little bit has set the scene for Christmas. The Christmas countdown is certainly on as classes begin their preparation for their nativity performances, Ed arrives for the first Christmas carols' practice and Friends of Alveston take part in a Christmas wreath making evening. The school is abuzz with children and adults talking about the number of sleeps 'til Christmas, school get-up days to the holiday and how early is too early to have your decorations up?
In the midst of the cold weather and the excitement, I can't help but think of those for who the first flakes of snow brought added misery. Those struggling to heat their homes, or others with no homes at all, will not have found the joy in this weather.  We cannot solve the problems of the world but we can all do something to help. Thanks to our families, we sent a mountain of shoe box presents to children who would otherwise receive nothing this Christmas and many kilos of donations to the food bank. This week our Collective Worship focus was 'Community' and, as we have seen over the last two weeks, nothing says 'Community' like Alveston. Thank you once again for all your help to support ours.
Wishing you a warmer, relaxing weekend,
Anne Clewley

Way to Go Mckenzie!

We would like to give a little shout out to a  Star of Alveston past, who started in Year 7 at Stratford School in September.  Mckenzie  told us in a recent Geography test she came 5th out of the whole year of 350 pupils. Way to go Mckenzie! Our Geography Lead and Mckenzie's Year 6 teacher, Miss Eddy is absolutely delighted and we are all very proud of you. Thank you for popping in, sharing your news and spreading the joy.
We love to see our former pupils and hear how they are doing, so please do stop by and let us know!
Out-of-this-World Artwork!

Today the children in Year 5 have been decision-making in art by recreating snapshots of space-themed artwork. We have been using lots of different materials to produce our artwork including paint markers, oil pastels, chalk pastels, art pencils, felt tips and colouring pencils. The children have done a great job and I think the artwork looks FAB !!!
Print Run

Year 4 have produced some jazzy artwork this week! They experimented printing with common every day objects such as doilies, duplo, lollysticks and shells, as well as making their own cardboard blocks to print with. They also tested out printing with acetate sheets and etching into the surfaces to create hatching and cross hatching. The children combined prints to make a large scale, abstract composition.

Snow Time Like the Present!

We had wintry scenes a-plenty at Alveston this week. Take a peek here at what some of our Alveston Owls got up to in the snow.

The cold weather made a timely entrance for our school children to don their wellies in support our farmers (and keep their feet dry at the same time!).  On the day that thousands of our farmers were expected to gather in London for a rally against the planned changes to inheritance tax rules for farms, our children showed their solidarity. Read all about it at this link.

Eco Committee Spread Christmas Sharing Message

This week our Eco Committee met and discussed a letter we have received from Circular Santa (Stratford Climate Change Committee). Today the children have shared this with their classes and all the children have brought one home. If you are all able to do a small bit, this could make a huge difference. Alveston staff's Secret Santa will be doing the same!

A copy of the letter can be read here.

Shoe Boxes Filled with LOVE!

This week, Alveston Primary sent 76 shoebox presents to the charity Teams4U. This means that 76 children who may otherwise not have received anything for Christmas will receive some kindness and cheer. Our shoeboxes will make their way to Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Bosnia and Romania very soon!

Everyone in our community has been involved in this project - children, parents and staff - and we cannot thank you enough.  Alveston, you are truly wonderful!
TT Rockstars Battle of the Classes

We are so excited to launch our first TT Rockstars "Battle of the Classes"! This will be between Year 4 and Year 5 on the morning of Wednesday 8th January and between the winner and Year 6 in the afternoon. These three classes can come to school on this day dressed as rock stars. Get practising your times tables Y4, Y5 and Y6 - give your class the chance to be the overall winners! This will become an annual event so all children will get to experience this in the years to come.
A Little Respect in our Community

We are sure you have also noticed the increased number of places displaying signs asking for people to be respectful to staff, ranging from a gentle reminder to stating a zero-tolerance policy for abuse of staff. We have got used to seeing them pop up at the doctor's surgery, the dentist, on buses, in shops, post offices and hospitals but we have also noticed an increase in the number of similar recorded messages on voicemails. Each new sign or message saddens us – what kind of world, country, town are we becoming that people need reminders to be kind and patient everywhere they go?

We have the most amazing team at Alveston, particularly in our school office. They are a powerhouse of positivity and the warmth radiates out to the rest of the school. The majority of the adults in our community reciprocate this, always speaking to our team respectfully and warmly. On the odd occasion when this has not been the case, the team keep smiling, keep helping. With the children at the centre of all that we do, we will always work hard to do our very best for the children in our care. When we make a mistake, we will work hard to rectify it, as swiftly and carefully as we can.

Please help us to keep our school free of posters and messages to remind our community to approach everyone with respect, kindness and patience. We all do so much for so many in our wider community, let’s not forget to do the same for those at the core, because together we really do all shine brighter.

Winter Uniform

Alveston became a beautiful winter wonderland on Tuesday (as perfectly predicted by Toni Knight!) and the children enjoyed all the joy a snow-covered school brings.

Temperatures this week have been extremely cold. We continue to go outside for our breaks but if we all wrap up we can keep warm and dry and enjoy the fun a cold snap can bring.

Please would you ensure your child comes fully prepared for the weather. Alveston school coats must be worn to school, they are not only warm but also waterproof. The snow this week was very wet indeed! Children must also ensure they are wearing their uniform jumper or cardigan to school. Some of our children don't seem to feel the cold, but if your child does, please remember they can wear extra layers in the colder months, just please make sure they are in keeping with uniform colours.

Hats, gloves and scarves help to keep the children toasty. Please do send your child to school with at least a hat and gloves...and don't forget to name each item of clothing to help any lost items get back to you. Thank you!
Applications open for 2025 Reception and Primary School Places

The deadline for 2025 primary school places is 15 January 2025. All applications received by the deadline will receive a school offer on 16 April next year, which is National Offer Day. Any applications submitted after the deadline will only be considered after this, meaning the child is much less likely to be offered a place at a preferred school.

Applications should be made online at: https://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/primaryplace, where you can also find lots of useful information on priority school areas and admissions criteria.

Black Box Tuition

The children were treated to an assembly this week from Black Box Tuition, who run afterschool drama and musical theatre clubs for primary schools in the Warwickshire area. Their classes are focused purely on building children’s confidence, sparking their imagination and giving them a safe environment to learn how to sing, dance and act. The company mission is to make this opportunity as accessible and affordable as possible, with classes open to both KS1 and KS2, and priced at £6 per child, per class. Sessions will start at Alveston in the Spring term, from Friday 10th January until Friday 14th February. Should you be interested in finding out more, please follow this link.

General Reminders

Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane, Oak Road or any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message.  You may also email parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday) nor for COVID absences.

Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer.  Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via:

parents3002@welearn365.com
