News

13th September 2024

After all the rain, it has been wonderful to end the week in glorious sunshine – even if it is a little bit chilly! This is a special time of the year, with the leaves turning and beginning to drop, and the richness of their colours brightening all our days.

On Friday, the children also brightened our day in SHINE time and we celebrated the first Stars of the academic year. Letting their light shine before us, so we could all see the good work they do. (Matthew 5:16). From presentation and perseverance to critical thinking and class contributions, each child has started the year as a super role model for their peers and contributed to the richness of our school. Well done Stars!

In keeping with the time of year, we have been singing ‘Autumn Days’ this week, a song the children really enjoy and sing with gusto. The words remind us to say thank you for all the wonders of the autumn and it is joyful to hear. I am also looking forward to singing ‘Collecting Conkers’ in the weeks ahead!

Lots and lots of news in the newsletter this week, from classroom updates to the results of the TESCO Community Grant and a VERY special postcard...

Whatever you are doing this weekend, I hope you are able to enjoy the season and take a moment to be grateful for the richness it brings to the world.

Reception Super Stars!

Alveston's new Reception children have blown us away this week! They have settled into their new environment with confidence and ease. They have been playing and communicating with each other in their new classroom. The children have followed the routine in a spectacular fashion all week and they just keep getting better. We are all super proud of them.
It's beginning to feel a lot like Autumn...!

This week, Year 5 have been thinking about the season of Autumn that features within their English unit this term. They have been exploring the signs of Autumn around the school grounds (blackberries, mushrooms and acorns) and used their discoveries as inspiration for their sentences.
A place for every value and every value in its place!

Year 2 have been using various resources to work on their understanding of "place value" in Mathematics. They have been working hard to determine the value of every digit, depending on its position within a number. We have some lovely concentration faces here!

An Alvestonian Olympian!

When we returned to school, we found the postman had delivered a very special postcard. Just days after winning her silver medal at the Olympics, Esme Booth sent the school a very special postcard to inspire our children. We shared this during SHINE time today. We were all very proud to see Esme compete in Paris and to stand on the podium to receive her medal with her team.

Esme was a very kind, polite and creative pupil at Alveston. When the rowing club came to school to talk to the children, Esme’s name was picked out of a hat to go and have a rowing taster…and the rest (after a lot of hard work and dedication) is history!

It was incredibly kind of Esme to remember the school at such a momentous time and we look forward to welcoming her into school soon.

The scores are in…!

Last academic year we submitted an application to TESCO’s Community Grant Scheme. At local TESCO stores, families, staff and friends were able to vote for their favourite community project, in the hope of securing funds up to £1500.

We are absolutely delighted to announce that Alveston won first prize and a total of £1500 towards the cost of our playground!!! Thank you so much to everyone who voted when they shopped. We did it!! And we couldn’t have done it without you! THANK YOU.

Home School Agreement

To deliver the very best outcomes for all our children and our community, it has always been important that we work together. We are very grateful to our families for their support with their children’s educational steps and all that they do to help Alveston be the school it is. Next week we will be sending out our Home School Agreement, which has not been shared since pre-pandemic! This agreement outlines what school, parents and children should expect from each other to help make the Alveston primary school experience great for everyone. We will be asking children to read and sign the agreement, to ensure they are aware of their responsibilities. At parents’ evening we would invite parents to do the same. Together we can ensure we are delivering the very best to our children, to give them the education they deserve and support each child to reach their full potential.

Gas Safety Week

You may (or may not!) be aware that it is Gas Safety week this week! Gas Safety Week is here to remind residents how to keep yourselves gas safe and raises awareness of the dangers of poorly maintained gas appliances, which can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

Learn more about gas safety here.

General Reminders

Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane, Oak Road or any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message.  You may also email parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday) nor for COVID absences.

Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer.  Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via parents3002@welearn365.com.
