News

17th March 2023

We have been celebrating Science Week and it has been super exciting in school with investigations in all classes from mouldy bread to dunking biscuits, electricity to racing cars - it's been all go! You can read more about the investigations in each class in next week's newsletter.

We are looking forward to celebrating Shakespeare Week next week. We are so lucky to live where we do and to have so much history and culture on our doorstep. Look out in Stratford for events over the next few weeks to celebrate. Lots of the houses and the museum put on free events to encourage families to learn more about the man who made our town famous!

As you will have read from Mr Quinn's letter yesterday, we are all missing Mrs Clewley's presence in school at the moment but are sending our love and best wishes to her and her family and we can't wait to welcome her back on the 27th.

With Mothering Sunday this weekend, I wish everyone a peaceful and restful few days. Whether you are celebrating, cherishing memories or reflecting.

Farmers and Vikings!

Last week Reception braved the elements on their very first school trip! They boarded the bus (this was a highlight for many!) to visit a real working farm. They showed bravery when stroking the animals, listened carefully to the interesting information the farmers gave and were so resilient with the cold weather! Some experienced sitting in the farmers tractor whilst others bottle fed newborn lambs - some only 24 hours old! Chicken eggs were collected and cows fed. They finished off the morning baking bread and making butter from scratch before sampling it - it was delicious. The children had an unforgettable experience and were excellent ambassadors for our school. We were very proud of them!

Year 4 have had an incredibly busy time over the last two weeks!

Early last week Sammy, Brooklyn, Sadie and Jack, attended a reading celebration at Stratford Library. As part of the library’s yearly reading celebration, all Year 4 students were given the challenge to produce a creative response to a book we had read together. We worked together to produce memory boxes from the Eye of the Wolf. The outside of the boxes represented the wolf. Once you opened the boxes, inside you discovered one of the wolf’s memories of Alaska. These four children showcased our creative response to other schools in the hope to inspire them to also read the tale. They also took part in a reading quiz which …. THEY WON! Well done Team Alveston! For those who worked hard in class and the four children who represented us at the library. We are all very proud of you!

Last Thursday, Year 4 became Vikings at Compton Verney. The cold, snowy conditions did not stop us from living as Vikings once did. We marched down to the Viking Forest School where we showcased our skills of lighting sparks. We also built dens and created a traditional fence using sticks and mud. Year 4 acted as true Vikings with determination and a can-do attitude despite the weather.

Back inside, Year 4 discovered the art of weaving, wrote in runes and explored Viking artefacts. We finished off the day by making a clay face of a Viking warrior. We are all very proud of you Year 4 and how you represented the school at Compton Verney.

Celebrating "Uniqueness" on World Book Day!

Thank you to all the children who entered the World Book Day 'unique' photo competition. We had some really fantastic and creative entries: from reading to pigs, to reading on a car and reading in a dog crate!

The winners were as follows:
R, Y1 & Y2 - Grace
Y3 & Y4 - Seth
Y5 & Y6 - Oscar E

They each received a £5 Amazon gift voucher to spend on a book of their choice. Well done Grace, Seth and Oscar!

Please do take a look at the winning entries here - we think they're amazing!

Driving and Parking Safely Around School

Please can we ask parents and family members to be mindful of neighbours and other drivers when coming to and from school. Unfortunately, some neighbours are having their driveways blocked and other parents have reported they have been overtaken on the drive up to the football club. Do take care and keep yourselves and the children safe. Thank you for your consideration.
A Fond Farewell

This week we bid a fond farewell to Miss Clark who has been helping in Reception for the past year. She has been a great help and the children will miss her. We wish Miss Clark all the best for the future.
MIND Charity Fundraising

Hannah, in Year 5, has come up with the wonderful idea of raising money for charity using her special talent of drawing. Hannah has chosen to support MIND, a charity that helps and supports so many with mental health issues.

In the space of one weekend, Hannah completed 6 drawings and she has raised £65 so far! If you would like to help Hannah raise further funds, please take a look at her flyer below and be sure to place an order for these one-off originals supporting such a great charity. Hannah can draw a whole range of pictures or even "cartoon"  a picture or photo you already have.

This is such a kind and generous thing to do and I think you'll all agree that Hannah is modelling Alveston's school values wonderfully!
