April 2025

4th April 2025

I’d like to take some time this week to thank the amazing people who volunteer their time to make Alveston the incredible community it is - in school and out.

Last week, our Friends organised an ArtBase Mother’s Day painting evening which was so calming and a lovely opportunity for families to paint, chat and spend time together midweek. Last night, our Friends again pulled out all the stops to put on an Easter Bingo evening complete with egg prizes, a bar and a 50/50 draw. Both of these events raised so much money towards the 'extras' that make school more enjoyable for the children. We are so grateful to our Friends for volunteering so much of their time.

Today was the last bicycle bus with the amazing Simon Storey taking the 'commanding officer role'. What an impact Simon has already had on our school community. Over the last six weeks, we have seen so many families get on board the bus with a whopping 30 riders today!!! A huge thank you to Simon, who has volunteered his time each week to help us start this, to Gracie, who has been heading this up for Team Alveston and to our families who are now taking over this job. We are so grateful for your time.

Finally, a big thank you to our Governors who work tirelessly in the background to help keep the wheels turning behind the scenes. Meeting regularly and coming into school every half term to meet with staff, visit lessons and to talk with pupils - they too volunteer their time to ensure that Alveston is the thriving school that it is.

So if you know someone who volunteers their time as one of our Friends, on our Bicycle Bus or one of our Governors - please thank them. Without them, our school wouldn't be what it is.

Have a really lovely weekend.

Intrepid Explorers

Year 4 enjoyed a geography-packed afternoon, where they first learned about the eight compass points. They then created detailed maps of the school grounds and planned an expedition around the school using their compass skills. Their classmates followed these routes and provided feedback. This activity helped us understand the kinds of challenges real explorers might face if they don't plan their routes carefully.
Respect Your Elders

Year 3 went to Forest School recently and used tools to cut elder branches to make elder beads. Some children went on to make elder bead necklaces. The children learnt how to safely use secateurs, loppers and palm-drills, remembering to protect their 'non-tool hand'. Others concocted terribly gruesome potions which linked to their Shakespeare work around Julius Caesar. Lots of the children were noticing the small changes in nature as we welcome in the Spring season.
Heart to Heart

As part of our science topic about the circulatory system, Year 6 dissected pig's hearts this week. They worked in groups to make an incision and observe the heart closely from the inside. They observed the left and right ventricles and atriums - which make up the four chambers - as well as the tendons, papillary muscles, valves and superior vena cava.

General Reminders

Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane, Oak Road or any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message.  You may also email parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday).

Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer.  Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via:

parents3002@welearn365.com
