22nd May 2026

It has been a lovely half term seeing OPAL truly implemented so well across the school, with playtimes transformed into such positive, engaging experiences for all of our children already. It is lovely to see children truly playing, engaging with one another and being creative during their unstructured time. Long may this continue. Thank you so much to parents for your kind donations — these opportunities simply would not be possible without your continued support.

We have also enjoyed a wonderful end to the half term with our Arts Week, themed around Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday. The children have had some amazing opportunities, including samba drumming workshops, the creation of a stunning willow caterpillar with Wayside Willow, and a beautiful painting with ArtBase depicting the natural world which will be displayed in the hall. Alongside this, every class has taken part in Forest School activities and there has been lots of fantastic work taking place within classrooms throughout the week.

I am incredibly proud of everyone’s hard work and creativity throughout the week. A very special thank you to Mrs McFeely for bringing everything together so brilliantly and to our parent-volunteers who have been in supporting different activities this week too. Hopefully you will spot the new art pieces up in the coming weeks as they are completed.

I hope this half term brings a much deserved rest to you all. Please remember we have an INSET day on Monday 1st June so we look forward to welcoming everyone back on Tuesday 2nd June.

Goodbye, Miss Leary!

It is with great sadness that we inform you that the lovely Miss Leary will be leaving us just after half term. Now is a really important time for Miss Leary to concentrate on her family but while she will be waving goodbye we know she will be popping in to say hello to us, from time to time. We wish Miss Leary all the luck for the future and thank her for everything she has done for Alveston for the last (nearly) 3 years.
All About Arts Week!

This week, children in Years 1, 4, 5 and 6 had the exciting opportunity to work alongside ArtBase to create a fantastic David Attenborough-themed mural, which will soon be proudly displayed in the school hall. Using acrylic paints, the children worked incredibly hard on their individual sections of artwork, carefully adding colour, detail and creativity. Each piece has come together beautifully to create one large, striking image celebrating the natural world and the inspiring work of David Attenborough. We are extremely proud of the children’s teamwork, effort and artistic talents, and we cannot wait to showcase the finished mural for everyone to enjoy!

Year 2 have had a truly fabulous Art Week, filled with creativity, music, movement and outdoor learning! Throughout the week, the children explored a wide range of artistic experiences, including willow weaving, samba drumming and country dancing with Mr Hollis. They also designed beautiful world collages, painted animals and learned about the work of David Attenborough, exploring his passion for wildlife and the natural world. One of the highlights of the week was joining Year 1 for a special Forest School session to celebrate National Bee Day. The children painted bees, danced like bees and even enjoyed cooked sugar apples around the fire. They also created bee drinking holes to help support wildlife in our environment. It has been a wonderful week full of imagination, teamwork and hands-on learning. The children have embraced every activity with enthusiasm and joy.

Year 5 created watercolour animals inspired by the artist Faye Moorhouse. After painting the body of the animals, the children applied detail with pencil and pen to add personalities to their animals.

Year 6 took part in a variety of exciting activities this Arts Week, including country dancing and art panel work. In class, each child selected a Galápagos animal and used acrylic paints alongside careful brush techniques to complete half of the missing image. They also created the background wash and added detailed textures to represent scales, fur and other features.

It's been a truly creative and imaginative week and the children have all embraced their artistic sides. Well done, everybody!

Forest School Fun!

Year 5 enjoyed a fantastic sunny morning at Forest School this week. The children explored their creativity by making beautiful nature-themed stained-glass windows using sticky back plastic and colourful tissue paper. They also created their own interpretations of nature images inspired by the outdoor environment around them. The finished pieces looked absolutely amazing, especially when the sunlight shone through them. Well done, Year 5, for your creativity and enthusiasm!
Cakes with Heart

Evie, Lizzie, Isabelle and Lily H showed fantastic initiative and teamwork by organising their very own charity cake sale last Sunday in support of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)! With help from their families, the girls baked and sold a wonderful selection of cakes to local families outside Lizzie’s house. Thanks to their hard work and the generosity of the community, they raised an amazing £205 for animals in need. The girls said they wanted to do something to help protect wildlife and were delighted with the amount they raised. Well done, everyone - what an amazingly kind thing to do!

General Reminders

Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please note: Parking is only available if there are spaces free and we can only park in the allocated bays. Once all the marked bays are full each day, parents will need to find alternative parking when dropping off and collecting their children. Please do not park in any other areas of the car park going forward. Please do not park on any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings at the main entrance to school. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message. You may also email parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday).

Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer.  Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via:
