7th July 2023

As many of you will know, teaching is my second career. I loved working in retail and was lucky to have a very exciting, enjoyable and successful career that took me all over Europe. I was loathed to leave it, but there was always a pull towards teaching. Working in a primary school with small children, you experience all the seasons in full technicolour. When we say certain things make our hearts sing, we really mean it. I have had joyous times in retail when contracts were secured, stores were opened and awards were won, but nothing compares to the successes of our children. At times I think I could literally burst with so many wonderful emotions when we see our children enjoying school, succeeding, shining and growing in every way. Tears of joy and pride are never far away. We celebrate our children all together almost every week in our Celebration Assembly. When you experience this weekly, you forget it is not the norm in some work places and indeed, in some schools.

This week was no exception. We sang a passionate, heart felt 'thank you', we celebrated individual Stars of the Week and our athletes, shared awards for maths and reading, wished our friends a happy birthday and cheered for all those who won team points this week. At the end, a parent shared his feelings about the assembly. It reminded me just how wonderful our celebrations are and how privileged we are to be able to deliver and share these experiences with our community. Thank you Mr Bateman for bringing this back into sharp focus with your wonderful feedback.

With all that joy, there was no better way to end a busy week than with a Summer Fayre with the most glorious weather! We will share more information and photos next week, but for now, I would like to give an enormous thank you to everyone who, as part of Friends of Alveston, delivered another wonderful Fayre.
Happy weekend everyone!

Change Makers Healthy Lifestyles Workshop – Fussy eating support

Fussy Eater Workshop - July 17th

As parents often talk to us of the difficulties they face when their child is a fussy eater, we have arranged for Mia Mould from Change Makers to deliver a workshop to support parents with children who display fussy eating behaviours. The workshop will cover the Eatwell Guide, top tips and practical advice on reducing fussy eating behaviours.

The workshop will be 45 minutes and will be held at Alveston C of E Primary School on Monday 17th July at 9am till 9:45am. The workshop is free to access. If you would like to join, please contact Mia Mould on mia.mould@rugby.gov.uk or call or text 07833 046503.

Change Makers Healthy Lifestyles Workshop - Autumn Term Club

In the autumn term, Mia will also be running weekly workshops to support children and families to promote healthy eating and lifestyles. We know our families promote these topics at home, however often children respond more positively (or believe it more!) when they are shared by a third party.

All children are welcome to attend this Change Maker club. Children must attend these workshops with an adult parent or carer. More information will follow and in addition, Mia will lead a whole school assembly in September. The proposed dates are below, showing the topics to be covered. Please let our admin team know if you would like to attend these by emailing parents3002@welearn365.com with the subject 'Change Maker Workshops'.

Week 1: Thursday 28th September – Eatwell Guide

Week 2: Thursday 5th October – Portion Sizes

Week 3: Thursday 12th October – Physical Activity

Week 4 : Thursday 19th October – Sugars & Convenience Foods

Week 5: Thursday 26th October -  Food Labelling & My Healthy Day

Ready, Set....Read!

The Reading Agency, in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust and public libraries, has announced that the theme for this year's Summer Reading Challenge is 'Ready, Set, Read!'

This year's challenge aims to keep children's minds and bodies active over the summer break, empowering young people to forge new connections with others and unleash the power of play, sport and physical activity through reading.

How to Take Part
Children of Primary School age can join up at their local Warwickshire County Council library from Saturday 8 July. They will borrow and read books, eBooks and audio books, collect special stickers and rewards for reading and can attend events throughout the holidays. Children can also take part via the Summer Reading Challenge website, where they can sign up for a free Challenge profile and get book recommendations and tips for accessing books for free at home. They can review books, unlock digital awards and access competitions, videos and games.

Join in the fun...and help to prevent the summer reading 'dip' that many young people experience during the summer holidays while schools are closed.
Calling all budding chefs...!

Bayleaf Cookery School will be back running an after-school cookery club at Alveston on Thursdays in the Autumn term and they’re enrolling NOW!

Cookery Club is open to Reception - Year 5 and starts on 14th September...so don't delay! You won't want to miss out on margarita pizza, cheesy bonfire bread, apple turnover or sticky toffee pudding (as well as many other delicious recipes).

Bayleaf Cookery School was established in 2013 with a mission to widen children's food horizons and get them excited about food and cookery. Since then, they have been working with an increasing number of primary schools across Warwickshire, Solihull and Coventry, delivering cookery clubs that spark children's interest, engage their imagination and build the foundations for a lifelong love of cooking for themselves.
