News

23rd September 2023

On Wednesday, as our School Office Manager Mrs Matthews so accurately said,  it was like "someone just turned off summer!" but in true 'shining' spirit, no-one has let this change of weather cloud what is going on at Alveston!
Working from home, I miss the best bit about working in a primary school - being with the children, hearing their news first hand and welcoming them all into school each morning. I am however the luckiest Head Teacher, as I work with an amazing team who have ensured I am kept right up to date with all the goings on! The highlights you will see here, such as the pupil leadership groups getting off the ground for the new academic year,  the Eco Warriors making a very enthusiastic start leading a Collective Worship and so many children running in the first Cross Country meet of the season - and didn't they do well! I have also been kept up to date with how the children are doing in class and today I was treated to some fabulous Year 6 writing which earned Serena a gold sticker!
Well done to everyone who succeeded at something this week, who earned a team point, who shared some kindness and care - whatever the weather, you all bring the sunshine to Alveston. I am hoping to be back soon, standing at the gate, rainbow brolly in hand and I cannot wait!
Wishing you all a peaceful and rest-filled weekend,
Anne Clewley
Head Teacher

** Weekly Round-Up **

All sorts has been happening around and about Alveston Primary this week!
Year 4 enjoyed Forest School where they investigated the different species of plant around our Forest School site.

Children Take the Lead

This week, classes in Years 1 to 6 have voted for their Pupil Leaders for Eco-Warriors, Collective Worship Leaders, our Online Safety Leaders and the School Council.

The Eco-Warriors met for the first time on Tuesday and have planned a super programme of events for the next term. Following this, the Year 6 Warriors, Florence and Bella, led Wednesday's Collective Worship. They shared about the importance of preserving and protecting our local environment. They are keen to preserve the hedgerow at the top of Knights Lane and to encourage the builders to build the path on the inside instead.

Cross Country Stars

Wow! What a turnout for Cross Country! Not only did our children do a fabulous job in representing the school in the running, they also showed our school value of kindness to other schools. The children cheered and supported all schools who took part. Well done to all our Cross Country runners!

Towering Sunflowers!

During the summer term, The Friends of Alveston organised a sunflower competition and we recently announced the winners in school.

In third place was Year 2's Grace (173cm), in second place was Elsie's from Year 6 (280cm) and our amazing winning entry was Max's from Year 3!!! Max's towering sunflower grew to a whopping 340cm! Amazing! Well done Grace, Elsie and Max!

Special mention must also go to Magda (135.5cm) and Annabelle & Cora (105cm). Excellent effort, ladies!

Thank you to everyone who took part and also to the Friends for organising such a wonderful competition for all.

Parents Providing Community and Charity Support

One of our Year 6 mums, Kelly, is undergoing cancer treatment and recently made the decision to shave her head as she was losing so much hair. Before starting her treatment, another Year 6 mum, Lucy French, told Kelly that if she lost all her hair, she would shave her head in support, to try and boost Kelly and her daughter's spirits.
This weekend the mums and their children are going to shave Lucy's hair clean off!
As well as supporting each other, the mums have decided to support two charities too. The first is Breast Cancer Now, who have been very supportive of Kelly since her diagnosis. So far, Lucy and Kelly have raised over £2,000 and would love to increase this!

If you would like to support this cause, please do so via Lucy and Kelly's Just Giving page which is:

Lucy is also be supporting The Little Princess Trust by donating her hair to be used to make a wig for a young cancer patient. Lucy has been informed this week that her hair has been received and that the wig-making process is underway - amazing!

We wish both mums well and look forward to sharing further fundraising updates with you.
