News

5th July 2024

The second summer term brings such sharp contrasts and this week we have experienced one of the sharpest of all! With great excitement, we have welcomed our youngest and newest members of the Alveston Family to their settling-in sessions. As they familiarise themselves with their new environment and connect with their new friends, watching their confidence grow in such a short space of time is remarkable.
In the same week, we have been entertained by our Year 6 children in an outstanding, theatre-worthy performance of 'Paws and Claws'. Witnessing and reflecting on the unbelievable progress every child has made has been breath-taking.
Whilst the contrast of where each group is in their educational journey is sharp, their next steps are incredibly similar. Both groups taking big steps into new environments, with new routines, new friendships, each with the most amazing talents and vibrant characters.
Next week, all our classes will spend a day transitioning to their new class. The experience so similar for all. It will generate some nerves, but also great excitement. Each child will be supported as appropriate to them and I have no doubt each and every one is ready for this next step. As our new Reception and Year 6 children have done this week, they will shine so brightly.
Having just returned from the Year 6 residential, I wish you all much rest and sleep!

Comic creator Neill Cameron visits Alveston

This week, KS2 enjoyed a fantastic visit from the wonderful comic creator, Neill Cameron. Neill discussed his creations with the children, which included Mega Robo Bros. He showed the children how his graphic novels relate to everyday life, at the same time as being set in the future.

Inspiring us all to follow our dreams, Neil shared his drawings as a primary student and his drawings now. He spoke about following your passions and putting in hard work towards your goals. Neill shared his secret weapon to creating comics and developing new ideas which are “totally super awesome”. The children used his scientific method to create their own stories and comic characters, sharing them with each other. The children voted on creating a Pizza Dragon which Neill drew live with the children’s input during their creative and “totally awesome” workshop!

Dental Health Experts

As part of PSHE, and in line with their recent science topic, Year 4 recently learnt about the importance of dental health. They learnt the five steps to ensure a lifetime smile: brush your teeth twice a day; brush your teeth properly for at least 2 minutes; limit sugary snacks or drinks;  visit your dentist regularly and change your toothbrush every 3 months! The children's PSHE lesson was completed with the help of Colgate's Guide to a Healthy Smile. Colgate also kindly gifted the school a parcel containing a new toothbrush and toothpaste for the children. Enjoy brushing, everyone!
Online Safety Week

As promised last week, please read here for more information about what other year groups focused on during online safety week. Enjoy!

We will resolve any issues as soon as possible! Please do let us know your feedback on this new End of Year Report too. Tell us your favourite part of the report and if there is anything you would like added to the future reports!
Attendance to 1st July 2024

On Monday 1st July we sent out your child's attendance report as a dry run for the End of Year Reports sent on Friday 5th July.

In our previous attendance letters, we have shared the attendance data for each class and for the whole school. As the reports are automatically generated from our data system, this has not been included in the attendance reports.

Thank you to those parents who got in touch to let us know they found this data of interest. Going forward we will work to add this information to the reports.

Below please find the attendance by school and class from 4th September 2023 to Monday 1st July 2024.

General Reminders

Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane, Oak Road or any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message.  You may also email parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday) nor for COVID absences.

Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer.  Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via parents3002@welearn365.com.
