Making Their Voices Heard
This week in Year 6, the children have been learning to 'Make their Voice Heard' in Art. The children explored expressive drawing techniques. They looked at the patterns, colours and symbols of Mayan art. They explored mark-making using a range of handmade tools, items such as sponges, string, corks, straws and fabric. The children considered how symbolism in art can convey meaning. They developed spirit companion symbols to represent themselves by creating a drawn tile of line, pattern and colour.

Mummifying Tomatoes – A Fascinating History Lesson!
This week, our Year 4 children took a deep dive into the fascinating world of Ancient Egypt with a hands-on experiment: mummifying a tomato! As part of our history topic, the children explored how the ancient Egyptians used a process of preservation that is still a source of wonder today.
We kicked off the lesson with some amazing facts about the ancient Egyptian practice of mummification. Did you know that the Egyptians believed preserving the body after death was essential for the soul’s journey into the afterlife? They thought that if the body decayed, the soul would be lost forever. To prevent this, they used a special method that included removing the internal organs, drying the body with natron (a natural salt), and wrapping it in linen bandages.
The Egyptians also believed that mummification was a way to protect the deceased from decay, but it was a very lengthy and expensive process! Only the wealthiest people could afford it, and it could take up to 70 days to complete.
Reception class learning about Australia
Australia
In Reception, children have been learning about the country Australia. The children enjoyed learning about the different animals and their habitats. They explored famous landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House and Uluru. The children created Aboriginal symbols to tell a story. They sang an Aboriginal nursery rhyme called "Inanay". The children learnt the 7 continents song and are confident at pointing these out on a map.
Conductors
Year 5 have been exploring which materials are conductors of electricity. The children had a lot of fun creating simple circuits and investigating which materials allowed the bulb to light up.
Animal Magic
Year 1 have been exploring their new Science topic 'Animals' this half term. The children have been learning about birds and went on their very own bird watch, looking out for the most popular birds flying across the skies. The children were in awe as a large flock flew above them and they were very eager to count them all. Year 1 are also exploring the 6 different animal groups and learnt more about fish and amphibians this week.

More Sporting Stars!
Alveston has yet more sporting prowess to shout about! Korra and Jamie, in Year 4, have both been studying mixed martial arts for the last few years. They both took, and were successful at, their black belt mixed martial arts tests last year. The black belt is the highest ranking belt so it shows they have reached a very advanced level! Both children were awarded a certificate and a new, named black belt on 25th January for continuing with martial arts at black belt standard for several months. Well done both of you - this is a fantastic achievement! We are all very proud of you.
Rags2Riches Clothing Collection....coming very soon!
Don’t forget, Friends have arranged a reusable clothing collection with Rags 2 Riches 4 Schools for 12th February 2025. Any bag from home can be used to donate clothes in – and any clothing collections we make will be sent to Ukraine for those in real need. Please bring your bags in with you at drop-off on the day.
Rags2Riches only collect good quality re-usable clothing – so when you are sorting through your donations at home, please stop and think: is it clean, dry, and something you’d wear again yourself or pass on to your family or friends to wear? Please refer to the R2R website (link below) and the flyer (here) for detailed information on what they do and don’t collect, and please remember no uniform of any kind.
What happens to the clothes?
The clothing becomes affordable clothing around the world, this is going to Ukraine right now. The clothes need to be clean, dry and something you’d wear yourself, and can’t be worn out, or old fashioned.
Check the R2R website:

Friends Uniform Sale
Don't forget! Friends are holding a uniform sale on Thursday 6th February from 2pm-3pm in the Community Room. Cash and card accepted!
Polite Reminders
Mrs Newitt was approached this week by one of our Knights Lane residents who explained that they had been blocked on their drive one morning this week. They also expressed their concern at the general level of dangerous parking on the main road outside school. We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please be considerate to our residents on Knights Lane, and other nearby roads, and only park in the Football Club car park.
Please can you also ensure that you keep a close eye on your children until they come all the way through the gates in the mornings, for their safety. Thank you.
Warwickshire residents urged to take up flu vaccination as cases rise week-by-week
The UK is seeing unprecedented numbers of people of all ages diagnosed with the flu. Latest data from the UK Health Security Agency shows that flu is now circulating at high levels.
We are therefore urging eligible residents across the county to take up the flu vaccination with their GP or local pharmacy. For those who haven’t yet had the vaccine, there’s still plenty of time to take up the opportunity to protect against the most common type of flu viruses. People may still get the flu after getting vaccinated, but it’s likely to be milder and not last as long, reducing the likelihood of hospitalisation for those at a higher risk.
Community Interest
We post all community events and projects on our website under 'Our Community'. For more information about activities open to you, your family and your local community, please do check the pages regularly:
Last but not least, you can also find a list of
Stratford Food Bank's "MOST WANTED" items right
here. Please do take a look and help to support those in need in our local community.
General Reminders
Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane, Oak Road or any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.
Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message. You may also email
parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday) nor for COVID absences.
Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer. Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via:
parents3002@welearn365.com
