A Day at St James's Church
As you can see from the pictures, Year 2 had a fun-packed day at St James's church this week! The children enjoyed getting to walk to the church from school and said that it was exciting to be able to explore and spend lots of time in the churchyard. Outdoor time was spent reading the headstone inscriptions, searching for bugs in the plant pots and flowers and exploring the church grounds. Inside the church, Year 2 got stuck into crafting newspapers about the history of St James's church and they enjoyed a picture trail around the building. Costumes were adorned and lots of fun was had. The children were even treated to some bell-ringing by Miss Griffiths and Miss Wright...but our sources tell us that they might need a little more practice...!
Year 5 Football
We are thrilled to report on Year 5's recent football match against Bishopton. This was one of the first full matches our boys have played as a team, and they demonstrated exceptional teamwork and sportsmanship. Although Bishopton emerged victorious this time, our boys showed great resilience and adaptability. They listened attentively to feedback from Coach Tom and significantly improved their performance in the second half of the game. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and look forward to their continued growth and success on the field.
Tudors Alive!
At the end of last term, Year 5 visited Mary Arden’s farm to experience life in Tudor times. They immersed themselves in history by dressing up in authentic Tudor costume, creating Tudor wall-hangings, learning about Tudor food and herbal medicine, how to make butter, as well as how Tudor buildings were constructed. They finished the day by learning a traditional Tudor dance. What a day!
Birds and Beaks
As part of their Science topic on Evolution and Inheritance, Year 6 investigated how finch beak types impact upon feeding. For beaks, we used scissors, spoons, tweezers and pegs. As food, we used items such as paper clips, rubber bands and macaroni! Overall, we found out that our Tweezer-Beaked Finches were the most suitably adapted to eat the food. The Peg-Beaked Finches were the least successful in feeding. In conclusion, we learned that the finches’ (on the Galapagos Islands) beaks have evolved over many years to suit eating the food specific to their environment.
Little Owls
We have been sent the most adorable pictures to share with you all. Willow, in Year 5, has had the absolute treat of holding a one week-old "Little Owl". Willow’s grandparents have a nest of four and Willow had a chance to hold one over the weekend before the owl parents flew back in to feed them all. What a treat! If we're lucky, we might get to see some more pictures as they grow....watch this space!
I absolutely loved these pictures Willow and intend to print them out for my office! Keep the photos and the updates coming!
Staff Announcement
Earlier this year we announced that Mrs Rogers would be our new SENDCo from September 2024. Whilst we are delighted she will be taking up this important post, we knew she was leaving big shoes to fill in the classroom!
We have therefore been looking for an EYFS / Reception specialist to join our team next year...and we are absolutely thrilled to announce that we found one!
Recently relocated to Warwickshire and officially joining the Alveston Family in September, Miss Arbuckle will also be dropping in this term to get to know our Reception 2024 children and families.
I know you will join me in warmly welcoming Miss Arbuckle to Alveston and wishing her all the very best for this next step in her career.

General Reminders
Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane, Oak Road or any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.
Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message. You may also email
parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday) nor for COVID absences.
Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer. Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via parents3002@welearn365.com.
