News

21st July 2023

If we thought last week was a busy one, this week was off the scale! We have had Year 6's Play, several visitors and workshops, Sports Day and Picnic, Half Term Cup Celebration and Year 6 Leavers' Assembly...phew! What a send off into the summer for us all!
This week has been particularly special as we celebrated our Healthy School Week with a focus on kindness and how we can show compassion to ourselves and others. To take some time to remember how we can look after our mental and physical health just before we head into the summer break, and for some head for pastures new, has been time well spent. What a wonderful way to end the year!
However, we see examples of our children being wonderfully kind each and every day. I was delighted to receive an email from a Year 1 parent writing to thank and praise a Year 5 pupil for being kind and looking after their child during a lunch break - Alveston in action right there! Having worked hard with our community to distil our ethos, vision and values, it is joyful to watch the children living and breathing it around school. With my heart singing loudly because of this, I wish you all a peaceful and rest-filled summer break and I look forward to welcoming you all back on Monday 4th September.

Residential Round-Up!

Last week, we took 26 Year 6 children on their residential. In addition to raw excitement, the trip always starts with a few nerves for teachers just as much as children! Once we are on the road and busy with our activities - how quickly the nerves are forgotten!

The first pitstop at the Owl Centre always brings joy - holding and petting baby and young owls, feeding animals and enjoying a picnic in a barn has been the highlight of the trip for some.

At Abernant itself, we spent lots of time in and on the water - canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding and ... unplanned lake swimming! - as well as climbing, abseiling, fencing and archery to name but a few of the activities. Although I do believe the vending machine was a star attraction for many and the midnight feasts a real treat!

Watching the children unfurl with some of the additional freedom the trip brings, was a delight. It really was an absolute pleasure to take the children to Abernant. Watching everyone try new sports and activities, succeed and surpass their own expectations, exhibit sheer joy for so many different reasons and to get to know their characters (and humour) a little more, has been wonderful.

Those children who decided to stay in school have also been trying new things and demonstrating their growing independence. The children chose a country that they would like to know more about. They researched many areas of interest including cost of living, famous landmarks and national artwork and compiled their own presentations. In addition, they were super star helpers around the school, supporting our younger children with their learning.

As all our Year 6 children entered their final week of their seven years at primary school, I know they are completely ready for their next step in education.

Healthy Schools Week  - Kindness

For our last week of the year, we have been celebrating kindness. As a school, we have focused on being kind to our bodies, minds and others. With lots of workshops and activities, we have gained tools to regulate our emotions, keep our bodies fit and healthy and be kind to others, including our local swans.

Here are some of the workshops we have been involved in:

  • Sports Day
  • Healthy Eating Workshop
  • Being kind to our Granny when she comes to stay
  • How to look after our local swans with Cyril
  • Being safe online
  • Regulation Toolkit Day which involves yoga, puzzles, mindful colouring and craft, lego, circuits, sounds and smells
Royal Shakespeare Company Playmakers Workshop

Last week, Year 5 were lucky enough to perform on the world-class Royal Shakespeare Theatre stage as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's Playmaking Season. The show, The Wood of Words, was a specially commissioned play addressing issues concerning young people at the moment which cleverly incorporated the 'greatest hits' of Shakespeare's First Folio. We had the honour of closing the show and performing an excerpt from Julius Caesar. The children managed their nerves brilliantly and supported each other to put on a faultless performance and we are so proud of their hard work and commitment to the project. You were all absolute stars, Year 5, and we hope this incredible experience will stay with you for a long time to come.
Sports Day and Family Picnic

On Tuesday, we thoroughly enjoyed a wonderful Sports Day and family picnic. The weather was kind and the energy levels were high - just what we wanted to see.

We can officially announce that the 2023/34 Sports Day winners were (drum roll, please...........)

Online Safety During the Holidays

With the summer holidays just around the corner, children are looking forward to having more free time. For many, this will be spent online. Skips Educational, an online safety advisor, know that parents worry about what their children are doing online and often need ongoing support.

Please follow this link to a timely information document all about keeping children safe online over the summer holidays.

Change Makers Healthy Lifestyles Workshop – Fussy eating support

As parents often talk to us of the difficulties they face when their child is a fussy eater, we arranged for Mia Mould from Change Makers to deliver a workshop this week to support parents with children who display fussy eating behaviours. The workshop covered the Eatwell Guide, top tips and practical advice on reducing fussy eating behaviours.

Change Makers Healthy Lifestyles Workshop - Autumn Term Club

In the autumn term, Mia will also be running weekly workshops to support children and families to promote healthy eating and lifestyles. We know our families promote these topics at home, however often children respond more positively (or believe it more!) when they are shared by a third party.

All children are welcome to attend this Change Maker club but they must attend with an adult parent or carer. The workshops will commence on 28th September and run from 3:15pm - 4:20pm. More information will follow and, in addition, Mia will lead a whole school assembly in September. The proposed dates are below, showing the topics to be covered. Please let our admin team know if you would like to attend these by emailing parents3002@welearn365.com with the subject 'Change Maker Workshops'. Alternatively, you can fill in this form and return to the office.
