At Alveston, we seek to ensure all children leave with a true love of reading, so World Book Day is an absolute highlight of the year. This year was no exception. Events throughout the day included buddy reading, an author visit, The Masked Reader and enjoying our chosen bedtime story.
Here is what happened in each class:
Reception embraced their topic of Traditional Stories and turned their classroom door into Goldilocks' house. They made and tasted porridge (the sweeter the better) and enjoyed having reading time not only with their Year 6 buddies but with new buddies in Year 3 too.
Year 1 celebrated World Book Day by decorating their classroom door with their class text "The Tiger Who Came to Tea" and enjoyed lots of "The Tiger Who Came to Tea" themed activities!
Year 2 were very busy designing book covers for The Twits by Roald Dahl. We thought carefully about the appearance of Mr and Mrs Twit and the design on the original front cover. We loved joining in with the Masked Singer and Buddy-Reading with year 5.
Year 3 enjoyed reading stories to younger children. We had fun thinking about how we could change a story we already know into a new one with different characters and settings. It was a great day, and we loved reading more of our class reader and listening to our own choice of story.
What a brilliant day! From exploring different books in the library, to becoming illustrators, to sharing the love of reading with Year 2, Year 4 absolutely threw themselves into books. We attended a live lesson with the rest of the country, decorated our classroom door, guessed which teacher was reading behind a mask and met an author. The love of reading was definitely celebrated this World Book Day and in our cosy PJs!
Year 5 had a jam-packed day, full of activities including: 2 special assemblies, taking part in a live BBC lesson, meeting the author Ian Rowe, doing a quiz, playing The Masked Reader and book bingo and reading with our Year 2 book buddies! Serena, Elsie, Thomas and Matthew also went to the Stratford High School and came second in a quiz there against other Stratford Primary schools. What a great day!
The mission for World Book Day is it to promote reading for pleasure. In Year 6 this was accomplished through a variety of fun activities throughout the day. The children looked fantastic coming to school in their pyjamas and Oodies! We playing the Masked Reader and didn’t guess Mrs Clewley or Miss Eddy! We decorated our classroom door in the theme of our class text, ‘Clockwork’, and participated in a BBC virtual lesson. We completed a library scavenger hunt. We learnt how we might become an author ourselves (and how to write in meter too!) when we listened to author Iain Rowe. Finally, we absolutely loved buddy-reading with our very own buddies in Reception!
