News

27th June 2025

It was a joy to welcome so many of you in on Thursday for our last Learning Together Time of the year, as we celebrated 'The Wonder of Words'. The children love sharing their learning journey with you and we love to open the school doors and welcome you in just as much. We had orienteering, crosswords, rhyming words, describing shapes - all sorts going on. But in every class, without fail, there were smiles, laughter and engagement in learning, which is what we strive for. Thank you for giving up your time. For those of you unable to make it this time, don't worry. What never fails to wow us is the kindness that our parents display to other children around them, welcoming them into a huddle and supporting the learning of others too, so everyone in the class can benefit. It was like having a hundred extra teachers in for the morning - how lucky we are to have the most supportive community of parents. Thank you all!

This week we shared our plans for teaching teams next year. On Wednesday, the children will come in as normal and register in their current classes. We will go to Collective Worship as usual and then the teachers and teaching assistants will all gather in the hall. From there, the children will leave with their new teaching teams and they will spend the day in their new class. You can then collect them from their new class position - just on Wednesday. This will give each class the full authentic experience of being in their new class for the day and it will also give you the opportunity to see their teacher at pick-up too.

Have a lovely weekend!

Ch-Ch-Changes!

Year 5 have been studying reversible and irreversible changes in science. They looked at what chemical reaction takes place when combining vinegar and baking soda. The children had a lot of fun watching the glove expand with gas.
Oh, Biscuits!

The last two days with Year 4 have been all about biscuits — biscuits, and even more biscuits! The project kicked off with some serious market research, where the children taste-tested a wide variety of biscuits, carefully considering their appearance, texture, and flavour, as well as the packaging. Next, they rolled up their sleeves to make their own basic biscuit dough, thinking creatively about how to improve it. Then came the most exciting part: adapting their recipes for a specific target audience, all while sticking to a budget! The children designed their own biscuits and packaging, even creating miniature packaging nets before the cookery school sessions began. It was a challenging but hugely rewarding task, and it’s clear we have some budding "biscuiteers" among us! The grand finale was tasting and evaluating their creations — what a deliciously exciting journey!
Learning Together Time

Please read on for a little sneak-peek into this week's Learning Together Time:

This week, the children in Reception really enjoyed 'Learning Together Time'. They explored the 'Wonder of Words' through rhyming activities. The children made a 'guess my rhyme': they had to find words that rhymed and write them on a clipboard. This was a wonderful time spent together and their last in Reception before they transition to Year 1
Miss Arbuckle - Reception Class Teacher

A big thank you to all the parents who came in for Year 4's Learning Together Time. It was wonderful to see you learning alongside the children as we explored orienteering based around the circulatory system. Everyone enjoyed answering questions and working together, making it a fun and educational experience for all. We truly appreciate your support and involvement!

More updates next week!

Jam is Imperative!

Year 1 have been having fun this week learning lots of imperative verbs to support them when writing instructions in their English lessons. They had a very exciting session on Wednesday when they made their own jam sandwiches. The best part was eating them! The children then wrote their very own instructions of how to make a jam sandwich for the character in the story, ‘The Boy Who Sailed The World’, to put in his backpack and take on his worldwide journey.
Alveston Athletes!

On Wednesday, Part I of the local schools athletics competition began and we had lots of keen runners! Each pupil represented the school running either long distance or a sprint. Both boys and girls from each year group then ran to compete in a relay race. It was great to see such enthusiasm, excitement and support whilst representing the school. A big well done to all of you - it certainly wasn’t easy in the hot weather and you did yourselves proud!
Nature's Bounty

Last week at Forest School with Year 1 was an absolute scorcher, but they were very fortunate to spend their time under the cool shade of the tree canopies, enjoying the gentle breeze. The children collected their favourite natural resources from nature’s bounty to make their own nature bracelets, each one unique and special. Others became confident in safe tool-use, progressing from using peelers to carefully whittling carrots before moving on to shaping elder branches. Well done, Year 1 — it was a fantastic session of exploring nature’s beauty and developing new skills!
Harvesting Home-Grown Produce!

Year 4 recently enjoyed harvesting the fruits of their labour from the garden here at Alveston, which they planted alongside their parents back in May. They were super excited to taste their very own home-grown mangetout and cucumbers. Every child—and even the adults—gave them a try! The cucumbers were incredibly juicy, and the mange tout were deliciously sweet. It was a wonderful experience for everyone to enjoy the fresh flavours of their hard work.
Friends of Alveston Event Reminder –  ** Bag2School**

Friends have organised a clothing & shoe collection with Bag2School for morning drop-off on Thursday 3rd July, which will help raise funds for the children at Alveston. This is a great time for a summer clear-out and to get rid of any bits cluttering up your wardrobes. If you have any items that you are able to donate, please pop them in the provided bag and attach the leaflet to it. Items can include adults’ and children’s clothes, shoes (tied together please), belts, handbags and soft toys. The leaflet you received gives more information but you can also refer to the website here for further detail. There is no limit on the number of bags so if you are having a massive clear-out, we can accept all the bags!

Please note duvets, pillows and work or school uniform with logos are not accepted.

Most importantly - THE HEAVIER THE BETTER!!!

Apply to be our School-Crossing Patroller at Alveston Primary!

With a recent increase in traffic volume due to the NFU Ryon Hill site closure, coupled with an increase in the number of parents expressing their concern about the general safety levels on Knights Lane, we took immediate action. We appealed to our local Road Safety Officer for help managing the increasing risks and, after a traffic count highlighted the reality of our concerns, we are very excited to inform you that we have been awarded funding for a much-needed School Crossing Patroller on Knights Lane!

If you or anyone you know might be interested in this role, please do follow the instructions on the linked flyer to make your application. This role would perhaps suit a retired individual that lives in the village or a local parent with time to spare at the start and end of the school day. Or perhaps someone that simply wants to support the community.

Please note that the vacancy will close on 9th July 2025 with interviews planned to happen before the summer holidays, if possible! Rates of pay are competitive and full training will be given.

We are really excited about this and we hope that you welcome this opportunity.
Last Call for Free Parent Workshop!

As featured in last week's newsletter, we are offering a free parents workshop at school on Thursday 3rd July at 10am. The workshop will focus on how healthy routines can support your child's development. The session will be run by Claire Fry, from Children and Family Services (WCC). Mrs Rogers, our SENDCO, will also be on hand.

Please click here for further information and instructions on how to pre-book your free place.

We look forward to seeing you!

General Reminders

Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane, Oak Road or any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message.  You may also email parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday).

Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer.  Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via:

parents3002@welearn365.com
