World Book Day 2026 – A Day to Remember at Alveston
Well Alveston, World Book Day 2026 is definitely one to remember! From dragons and scarecrows to Miss Trunchbull and cosy pyjama vibes, everyone came into school looking absolutely amazing. From the bottom of my heart, I can’t thank you, your families and our staff team enough for the effort and enthusiasm shown today. The creativity from home, alongside the dedication of our staff, truly helped make the day so special.
Today definitely lived up to the theme “Reading for Pleasure.” Across the school, every class took part in a range of fantastic activities. Children enjoyed listening to a text read aloud by an adult in school to inspire their love of reading, choosing books to share with reading buddies, joining live lessons, and ending the day by dropping everything to read in a space chosen by each child, helping the joy of reading grow even more, alongside many, many more reading-inspired activities.
The Big Book Swap was joyous, and it was wonderful watching each and every child’s face light up when they found “the one.”
It has been truly wonderful to see the excitement and engagement throughout the day. If only the photographs could capture the feeling we had in school today, then everyone could experience the magic that filled our classrooms and corridors.
Thank you for coming together to make it such a memorable day.

World Book Day - some Key Stage 1 highlights!
Year 1 had a wonderful time celebrating World Book Day through a day full of stories, creativity and imagination. We began with a whole-school book sharing session, where the children chose to listen to different members of staff read a favourite story while dressed as their chosen characters. Back in class, we explored the fantastic work of Julia Donaldson, sharing her story The Paper Dolls and then recreating our own class version using colourful chalk drawings on the playground. We also enjoyed What the Ladybird Heard Next, which inspired us to design our own mischievous farm trap maps to stop the pesky Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len from stealing our fine prize tadpoles, pigs and even Pikachu! Later, the children proudly created their own Zog-inspired medals linked to our school values and coluored bright dragon bookmarks. We also voted for our favourite Julia Donaldson book and used our digital learning platform to present the results in a pictogram, with The Highway Rat coming out on top. We ended the day with a special DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) session, where children chose cosy reading spots all around the school to enjoy their swapped books—an exciting highlight that truly captured the joy of reading.
Year 2 had a wonderful time celebrating World Book Day, with our theme inspired by The Scarecrows’ Wedding. The day was all about enjoying stories and celebrating our love of reading. The children chose a school adult and a story to read together, created their own colourful bookmarks and designed their own “Twit”-style characters inspired by our class text. We also enjoyed watching The Scarecrows’ Wedding, took part in a fantastic whole-school book swap and had the opportunity to read wherever we liked around the school. It was a joyful day full of books, imagination and creativity, and it was lovely to see the children so excited about reading.
Books in Nature
Year 4 celebrated World Book Day during their Forest School session! Some of the children used natural materials they found around the site to create their own versions of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Others chose a quiet spot in a sheltered tree area to read for pleasure. There were also circle games taking place in the clearing, while another group worked together to build dens and padded them out with moss and grasses to make them cosy.

A Message from our Friends
The Friends of Alveston have been incredibly busy over the past few weeks. We are delighted to have funded some beautiful new bookcases for the library and we will also be purchasing some new books as well for the children to enjoy over the coming weeks. We have also purchased some Lego sets for the Lego club at school and more recently, a speed stacking set for the school to practise with.
We hope that you enjoyed our new Bonka Bar event. We have been blown away by the excitement and support! Thank you for your patience whilst we busily wrapped more bars and created more golden tickets for the children to enjoy. Please let a member of the committee or your class representative know if you have a prize to claim. A huge thank you to Caroline who owns The Staffing People for their generous £50 voucher donation which enabled us to purchase lots of gift vouchers to use as prizes! We also had some incredible prize donations from other small businesses in the area like the Cookie Cottage, Fairytale Farm, Mr Karting and Tiny Rebels so we hope all the winners of those golden tickets enjoy redeeming their vouchers. One final thank you to all the teachers who came up with a list of fantastic prizes for the children to enjoy in school. From class pyjama-days, to extra forest school and computing sessions to hot chocolate with Mrs Newitt, there was so much excitement in the air as the children opened their bars and celebrated any wins!
We look forward to seeing lots of you at our next event... the Easter Bingo!
Fetch the Engine!
Last week, Year 1 were delighted to welcome two firefighters from our local fire service, who shared fascinating insights into their important work. The children learned about the different types of rescues firefighters attend, explored the features of a fire engine, and discovered how their protective equipment keeps them safe in emergencies. The firefighters also reinforced key safety messages, including the importance of having working smoke detectors on every floor of the home. They explained that if families do not have working smoke alarms, they can contact their local fire service on the non-emergency number and firefighters will visit to fit them. The children practised the important safety technique “stop, drop and roll” in case their clothes ever catch fire, and they performed it brilliantly. Everyone was thrilled to receive some special goodies from our visitors, making it a truly enjoyable and informative afternoon for all.
Archery Stars!
On Thursday 5th March, four members of Alveston School attended an exciting archery session at Newbold Comyn Leisure Centre in Leamington. The children had an amazing time taking part in a range of fun archery activities throughout the session. They showed great enthusiasm, focus and determination as they practised their skills and challenged themselves to improve. Over the course of the session, it was fantastic to see how much their aim and accuracy improved. Each of the children worked incredibly hard and supported one another, making the experience both enjoyable and rewarding. Well done to everyone who took part – you should all be very proud of your efforts!
Netball Stars!
Last Friday, nine pupils from Year 5 visited King's High School to take part in an exciting netball workshop, followed by a competitive tournament. The children threw themselves into a range of fun and challenging drills, developing their passing, footwork and shooting skills. They showed fantastic teamwork, determination and great sportsmanship throughout the day. After the workshop, the team competed brilliantly in the tournament, finishing in an impressive 2nd place overall. To top off a wonderful day, they went on to win their final match, ending the event on a high! It was a fantastic experience for everyone involved. The pupils represented the school superbly and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity — especially the engaging drills and competitive matches.
School Council
On Wednesday 3rd March, School Council worked with Clarissa and Nikki from the School Nurses Healthy Future Team. The children worked on strategies to ensure personal safety when we are near roads and water. Before Easter, School Council will plan and deliver a special assembly for the rest of the school to share these strategies.
Place2Be Children's Mental Health Week
Thank you for all your generous donations for the Place2Be cake sale before half term. We are delighted to let you know that we raised £150 for a very worthwhile charity! A big thank you also to Friends of Alveston for your support in running this event. To coincide with the sale, Mrs Rogers and Laura Mitchell, from Place2Be, delivered a special assembly on the theme of Belonging to mark Place2Be Children's Mental Health week.
Schools White Paper 2026: What you need to know...
The Government has now published its new Schools White Paper, Every Child Achieving and Thriving, which includes proposals to improve support for children and young people with SEND. As part of this, a public consultation has been launched on the SEND reforms set out in Putting Children and Young People First.
These are proposals only, which means nothing will change for your child right now. Your child’s EHCNA, EHCP, and all existing SEND provision and rights will remain the same. The consultation simply invites families and professionals to comment before anything is decided.
Your experience matters and this consultation is your chance to help shape the future of SEND support for children, young people and families across England.
Growing Up in the Online World
Parents, guardians, and young people across the UK are being urged to shape the country’s next steps on children’s digital wellbeing, as the UK government opens the world’s most ambitious consultation on social media.
The consultation will gather insights from the public on how to keep children safe online across social media, AI chatbots and gaming platforms.
Warwickshire Road Safety Education, partnering with Warwickshire Fire & Rescue Service, is expanding its programme of child car seat checks to offer even greater support to families across the county.
This enhanced offer includes the launch of a new child car seat check referral and booking process, allowing community settings to request and host onsite car seat checking sessions directly.

A Message from Stratford Food Bank
Dear friends,
With the move to our new premises underway, we have launched an appeal at a critical moment in our journey. Our vision is to create a warm, inclusive community hub where people can connect, build confidence, and access personalised support that helps them move forward with dignity. For a limited time, Aviva is doubling every donation made through their Crowdfunder platform. This match‑funding opportunity means that your gift of £10 becomes £20, your gift of £25 gift becomes £50, and the impact you make for families facing crisis doubles. With demand continuing to rise across our community, this is a powerful chance to support our work and help create a space that means people don't have to face hardship alone. If you’re able, please consider donating while we work towards a future where no one goes hungry. If you can, please donate today. Thank you for standing alongside our foodbank and the people we serve.
General Reminders
Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please note: Parking is only available if there are spaces free and we can only park in the allocated bays. Once all the marked bays are full each day, parents will need to find alternative parking when dropping off and collecting their children. Please do not park in any other areas of the car park going forward. Please do not park on any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings at the main entrance to school. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.
Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message. You may also email
parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday).
Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer. Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via:
parents3002@welearn365.com
