February 2025

7th February 2025

What a wonderful week we have had in school. Our value this week has been 'kindness' and it really brings such joy to see kindness everywhere we look. From children offering friendship to others on the playground, to Rev. Linda telling us stories about her job and sharing tips to ensure others don't suffer 'grumpy hedgehogs'. We have also benefitted from kindness from members of our community - Simon Storey, Bicycle Mayor for Warwick (who is helping us to set up our Bicycle Bus) held an information evening this week and yesterday, Cyril the Swan Man for Stratford came in to tell the children all about his role and how he ensures the swans remain part of our river landscape. We have been inspired by others to think about how we can act with kindness. Alveston really is a special community to be a part of and weeks like this really emphasise it.

Have a lovely weekend.

All Aboard the Bicycle Bus!

The Bicycle Bus planning got off to a great start this week with lots of families around the Loxley Road keen to join. The team will be planning the "bus stops" next week, with a view to starting the bus after half term. If you haven't yet been in touch, but would like a spot on the bus, please contact Gracie on 07702 062562.

Cyril the Swan Man

We were delighted to be visited by Cyril Bennis during our 'Kindness' themed week. For 45 years, Cyril has cared for our swans, rescuing and teaching others about them. He is extremely knowledgeable about these beautiful birds and the children were quite simply entranced by his visit this week. We applaud Cyril for the recognition of his work by his majesty, King Charles, who will award him a British Empire Medal later this year. A fabulous way to start our Thursday!
The Trinity

Year 4 have been considering what 'The Trinity' means during their "Understanding Christianity" unit. They made some thoughtful, informative and eye-catching posters in small groups. They showed an excellent understanding - Mrs McFeely can't wait to get them up on the wall for all to see!
Chinese Culture and Spring Festival

In Year 3, we have been learning more about Chinese culture and traditions to celebrate the Spring Festival. We practiced some phrases in Mandarin and then created our own beautiful new year decorations to welcome the year of the snake!
All Things Clarice Cliff

This week, Year 1 used their knowledge of colour mixing. The children mixed only the primary colours red, yellow and blue to make secondary colours to create artwork inspired by the artist Clarice Cliff. The children painted in circles to fill their plates and make them bright and colourful. They produced some beautiful pieces (take a look above!) and enjoyed learning more about the famous artist who created simple but striking patterns.
Winter Wheelers

Year 5 have had a fab week this week with Bikeability! They have learnt how to ride safely on the roads by acquiring many practical skills. They have all worked hard, listened closely and followed instructions really well and we are proud of all of them. The children also braved the elements on a very chilly (-3oC!) Thursday morning which deserves an extra mention. Well done!
Alvestonian Athlete!

Oliver, from Year 5, was recently chosen to represent Warwickshire in the Midlands Indoor Athletics Competition. Warwickshire came in second place overall, losing out to City of Birmingham by just 4 points. Oliver and his team mates came so very close to making it to the Nationals. What an achievement in such a competitive field. We hope you are as proud of yourself as we are, Oliver? Well done!

Rags2Riches Clothing Collection....next week!

Don’t forget, Friends have arranged a reusable clothing collection with Rags 2 Riches 4 Schools for 12th February 2025. Any bag from home can be used to donate clothes in – and any clothing collections we make will be sent to Ukraine for those in real need. Please bring your bags in with you at drop-off on the day.

Rags2Riches only collect good quality re-usable clothing – so when you are sorting through your donations at home, please stop and think: is it clean, dry, and something you’d wear again yourself or pass on to your family or friends to wear? Please refer to the R2R website (link below) and the flyer (here) for detailed information on what they do and don’t collect, and please remember no uniform of any kind.

What happens to the clothes?
The clothing becomes affordable clothing around the world, with donations going to Ukraine right now. The clothes need to be clean, dry and something you’d wear yourself, and can’t be worn out, or old fashioned.

National Storytelling Week

During National Storytelling Week this week, Warwickshire Schools Library Service (WSLS) has been celebrating the joy of reading and highlighting how stories can inspire children and young people.

To help spark children’s enthusiasm for books, WSLS has some simple ideas for parents, carers, and teachers:

  • Keep reading together, no matter their age. Even once children can read on their own, sharing a book together is a great way to bond. Whether it’s snuggling under a blanket with hot chocolate or listening to an audiobook on a car journey, reading together makes it special.
  • Offer a mix of reading materials. Books are brilliant, but so are magazines, comics, graphic novels, eBooks, and audiobooks. It all counts!
  • Find stories that match their interests. If a child loves football, fantasy, or superheroes, there are books about those topics! Linking reading to their hobbies makes it more engaging.
  • Make reading accessible. For children with dyslexia, autism, ADHD, or visual impairments, look for books designed for different reading levels. Publishers like Barrington Stoke and Ransom create brilliant, accessible stories, and organisations like RNIB Bookshare provide free resources.
  • Let children choose. Giving them the freedom to pick their own books (even if they want the same one over and over!) helps build confidence and independence.
  • Be a reading role model. Let children see you enjoying books and talking about stories – enthusiasm is contagious!

General Reminders

Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane, Oak Road or any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message.  You may also email parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday) nor for COVID absences.

Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer.  Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via:

parents3002@welearn365.com
