22nd March 2024

Surrounded by Easter Eggs, Easter cakes, chicks and bunnies and with the sun shining brightly, Friday was a wonderful end to the Spring Term! The term has been a short one, but goodness me, we have packed so much into it!

This week we celebrated all things Easter. We were delighted to invite iSingPop’s Emma to school on Tuesday, to deliver workshops about the Easter story and teach the children new songs. We were delighted to share these with Rev. Linda in our whole school assembly at the end of the day.

Our Easter Service on Wednesday was an absolute joy! Sharing new songs of worship, as well familiar favourites, the children sang beautifully. Our Collective Worship Committee led the service at St. James’ and they did an amazing job of re-telling the Easter Story. It was a triumph and I was more than a little emotional, as I watched them shine so brightly. Thank you, children, for bringing such joy to us all.

Whatever you are doing over the next two weeks I hope it is filled with rest, love, fun and laughter.

British Science Week Continued...

As promised, here is a round-up of all the amazing activities that took place at Alveston for British Science Week last week!
Forest School

This week at Forest School, Year 4 focused on attracting insects and bees into our woodland area. They worked in teams to dig a small patch where they planted wildflower seeds. To mark the areas, each team constructed a teepee out of bamboo and sticks. Year 4 will be able to watch their wild-flower patches flourish over the next few months. We can't wait to see all the colours and wildlife that they bring!
Shakespeare Week

School has been a-buzz this week with all things Shakespeare! Below is a taster of just some of the creative activities the children have been involved in over the last few days, with photo links included. Please tune in after Easter for a big round-up of everyone's amazing work.

"In Year 5, we have been immersing ourselves in Hamlet. We have enjoyed learning all about the characters through books, film and even rap! To show our understanding, we produced and performed our own potted versions of the play."

"In Year 2, we read parts of The Tempest and gathered vocabulary to create a poem about the storm. We enjoyed hearing this story and discussing the characters and setting."

Tune in for more soon!

Playground Opening Service and Celebration

As you know, this year we have enhanced our outdoor environment for all our children to improve their overall health and wellbeing. Not only have we increased the number and variety of activities available to children around the main playground, we have also delivered a quiet, reflective space for children to retreat from the ‘busy-ness’ of the school playground for reflection, contemplation and prayer.

We would like to invite you all to join us for an Opening Service and Celebration on Wednesday 10th April at 10.00a.m. We will be joined by Rev April Gold,  Diocesan Director of Education, who has kindly agreed to open and bless our reflective space. The children will be leading this joyful service with lots of singing, readings and prayers, so we hope some of our families will be able to join us in the celebration.

As part of this grand opening, we also have a wonderful opportunity for the children to make a permanent mark on their surroundings. We are inviting the children to leave a pebble in the trough around the gazebo to represent someone they love and are comforted by, but who cannot be with them at school.  You can read more details here.

Viking Warriors Abound!

Yesterday, Year 4 became Vikings at Compton Verney’s Viking Forest School! They learnt how to be warriors in battle, invading an Anglo-Saxon village as well as how to settle and trade. The children lit their own fires, built a wall in the traditional Viking way, made bread by grinding their own seeds, constructed dens out of sticks, investigated artefacts and played traditional Viking games. Wow!

The children represented Alveston incredibly well showing our school values throughout the day. Compton Verney were very impressed with how involved the children were in all the activities and how polite they were to the leaders and members of the public.  A big well done to all children and thank you to our parent helpers!

Football Stars!

On Tuesday, our Year 6 Girls’ Football Team played in a mini competition against The Croft, Bidford Upon Avon and Claverdon Primary School. The girls used their determination and the skills they have been developing to place 2nd out of the four schools in the competition. We are incredibly proud of how motivated our girls’ team is to improve their teamwork, skills and tactics to play better and better each time they have a match. A big shout out and thanks to all families who continue to support our girls' play, to coach Tom Sidwell for helping them train and to Max and TJ for being the girls’ biggest supporters, cheering them on in each match!

Well done, Alveston!

Easter Baking Egg-stravaganza!

The Friends would like to say a HUGE thank you to the incredibly talented Auntie of Harry (Y3) and Georgia (Y1), who baked and donated the most amazing Easter cake for us to raffle off on Friday! Particularly as this is not Liz's day job and she raced to put this together after only getting back from her holiday this week. What a talented lady!

The class “Whatsapp” groups went wild when the photo of this cake was shared to drum up excitement ahead of Friday's bake sale!

The Friends would like to thank everyone for their continued support in purchasing and baking cakes and participating in all the other events we organise.

Wishing you all a very happy Easter x

Staff News

SENDCo and Pastoral Lead Appointment

This week we held interviews for our new SENDCo and Pastoral Lead. I am absolutely delighted to announce that Alveston’s new SENDCo and Pastoral Lead, starting on 1st September 2024, will be (drum roll please!) ... Mrs Rogers!

I am sure you will join me in congratulating Mrs Rogers and wishing her every success in her exciting new role.

Mrs Quainton Stubbs will officially retire at the end of July. As well as completing a handover through the summer term, she will continue to support and mentor our new SENDCo, as we move into the next academic year. In addition, Mrs Quainton Stubbs  and Mrs Rogers will hold introductory meetings with the families Mrs Quainton Stubbs works with.

Wedding Bells!

Miss Aqsa, our supply Teaching Assistant, has been working with us for most of this academic year. We would like to wish her all the very best as she flies to Pakistan this week for her wedding. We look forward to welcoming her back to Alveston in May. Good Luck Miss Aqsa!

New to the Team and a Staff Shuffle

We are delighted to announce that our Year 2 Teaching Assistant, Miss Leary, will be moving to work with Year 5 after Easter, taking up a permanent post to replace Mrs Sanderson. We would like to thank Mrs Sanderson for continuing to support us while we recruited and for continuing to do so during the KS2 SATs in May.

We have also welcomed two new faces to our team this week. Mrs Johnson joins us as a Teaching Assistant in Year 2 to replace Miss Leary. In addition, Mrs Mee will join Year 2 to cover Miss Aqsa's post.

I am sure you will give our new staff a warm welcome and wish everyone the very best in their new roles.

Take Care of Us!

We are currently searching for a Caretaker, with applications closing on Monday 8th April. Follow this link for more information. Caretaker Post. Suitable for the newly retired, those starting out or anyone with a minimum of 15 hours to spare to open school each morning and look after us all!

Bag It Up Over Easter for Bag 2 School!

We are pleased to announce that Friends have organised a clothes and shoe collection with Bag2School on Tuesday 23rd April...so why not get digging in those wardrobes and help raise some extra funds for our lovely school!?

Bag2School is the UK’s leading textile recycler and fundraiser working with schools and since its inception in 1999 it has now paid out over £48 million.

As well as raising funds for school, it also helps the environment by helping to divert unwanted textiles away from landfill. A recent DEFRA report has shown that textile collection schemes are helping to reduce the volume of textiles discarded as municipal solid waste. However it is a fact that as a nation we still send 350,000 tonnes of textiles to landfill every year.

By getting involved in our Bag2School collection, you have an opportunity to sort through your cupboards and wardrobes and donate unwanted textiles in the bag provided – this can include adults’ and children’s clothes, shoes (tied together please), hats, belts, handbags and soft toys, (please refer to https://bag2school.com for full details). In addition to raising extra funds, it will also raise awareness amongst the children of the benefits of recycling and reuse.

If you fill the donation bag and still have more then you can use any other bag to donate your items and don’t forget to ask grandparents, friends and neighbours to have a sort out as well!

In short, Bag2School will be collecting from Alveston Primary on Tuesday 23rd April. Please bring your bag (or bags!) to the main playground by 9am and help us have a really good collection.

THE HEAVIER THE BETTER!

Many thanks indeed for helping us with this unique fundraising opportunity!

General Reminders

Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane, Oak Road or any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

Coronavirus within School
If your child tests positive for coronavirus, please keep them at home for three days or until they are better after three days. Please report all absences to the school office as below.

Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message.  You may also email parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday) nor for COVID absences.

Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer.  Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via parents3002@welearn365.com.
