News

26th January 2024

We are very lucky to have such smiley, happy children at Alveston and this week has been punctuated with even more smiles! Firstly the introduction of hot buttered toast has lit up over 100 faces every break time across the school.  We are delighted this introduction has been so well received by pupils and parents alike. The 'Parent Playdates' have also been a joy for all our children. They have revelled in showing their parents, the parents of others and the school staff all their favourite areas and activities. We have enjoyed seeing our parents join in with gusto – it was wonderful to witness so many giving the exercise equipment a good workout before the children arrived! I may have popped on once or twice myself...! We are looking forward to welcoming the Reception and Year 5 parents to school next week. If the success of the playground could be measured in the smiles, fun and laughter we have witnessed this week -  we know we have hit the jackpot! Please do not worry if you were unable to join us, there will be other opportunities for the children to show you around.
In addition to planning an event to launch our reflective space and our 'positive people and pet pebbles', we are also planning a wonderful formal opening of the playground, with a very important VIP! Once we have a date we will let you know! Keep smiling Alveston - it makes all our hearts sing!
Wishing you a peaceful weekend,
Anne Clewley

Space Centre Report!

On the 27th November 2023, Year 5 went on an epic school trip to Leicester Space Centre. They found a control panel, a space shuttle simulator and a rocket launcher. The lucky ducks went in a glass lift to see the fuel container of a rocket. They also learned about how astronauts communicate in spacecrafts but their favourite thing was the hologram roof and planetarium. The film was so realistic and enjoyable that they felt like they were in space. They spent ages in the interactive area doing things like remaking the big bang, controlling a space robot and gravity walls. They were shocked to find out how many fancy suits the astronauts wore and how they functioned.

Year 5 would like to say thank you to all the adults who helped to plan and come on the trip, especially Rowan’s mum Tash and Mr Matthews who gave up their time to volunteer.

Forest School Tidy-Up!

This week, Year 4 had a fabulous time at Forest School where they helped Mrs Fielding with maintaining the site. The children built a log store, tidied the school grounds of broken sticks and even built a teepee structure. In line with our English book, The Eye of the Wolf, the children also played a game of wolf and hunters.
Northern Lights

Reception class learnt about the Arctic and Antarctic as part of their "All Around the World" topic. They shared the book Dear Polar Bear and were fascinated by the Northern Lights. They then created their own Northern Lights art work using chalks.
Measles Awareness

You may already be aware that there have been recent localised outbreaks of measles centred around the West Midlands, with confirmed cases in Birmingham, Solihull and Coventry. Warwickshire currently has no confirmed cases, however we wanted to make you aware of the below resources from the government's Education Hub:

Measles spreads very easily among those who are unvaccinated, especially in nurseries and schools. The best protection against measles for children and adults is to get both doses of the MMR vaccine. It is never too late to have these vaccinations.

Practicing good hygiene can also help guard against the spread of measles. Please remember to:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Use hand sanitiser when soap is unavailable.
  • Avoid touching your face, especially the eyes, nose, and mouth. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of used tissues properly.
  • Regularly clean and disinfect surfaces that come in contact with hands with disinfectant wipes and sprays to control the spread of germs.
Road Closure Update

General Reminders

Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane, Oak Road or any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

Coronavirus within School
If your child tests positive for coronavirus, please keep them at home for three days or until they are better after three days. Please report all absences to the school office as below.

Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message.  You may also email parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday) nor for COVID absences.

Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer.  Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via parents3002@welearn365.com.
