Newsletter 23.2.24

News

23rd February 2024

You know spring has sprung at Alveston, not just because the daffodils are up all around the school but also because our Class Assemblies have begun. With such a short half term, where possible we are doing two classes each week and it has been absolutely joyful! Listening to the children tell us about their learning journeys this year, sharing their work, songs, dances and gymnastics, it is evident that our Year 1 and Year 2 children are shining brightly.
As the result of parent feedback, we have changed the format of the assemblies this year. We are hoping this format will allow all our children to shine as brightly as the daffodils on the day. Please do let us know what you think, your feedback is appreciated and together we can continue to improve all that we do. There are so many examples of practices, process and procedures that we have changed as a direct result of parent feedback. Soon we will share these with you as a reminder of all the good works you do in helping us to shine as a school.
This newsletter is jam packed full of the wonderful works of our children too - so please do read on to see what they have been up to, both in and out of school.
Wishing you a peaceful weekend,
Anne Clewley

Singing in Church

Year 3 were treated to a wonderful experience at St James' Church this week. Working alongside Organist and Choir Master, Matthew Smallwood and the junior choir lead, Catherine Coton, the children learnt 6 new songs developing a range of skills including singing in rounds and singing Zulu for the song Siyahamba. At the end of the afternoon, the children performed their songs to their families. It was a truly joyous afternoon.

If your child would like to join the Junior Choir at St. James they would be very welcome to attend. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays 5pm-6pm and the children sing in the family service on the first Sunday of each month. It is free and there is a wonderful musical programme for the children to complete too.
World Thinking Day

On Thursday, it was Founders Day for Cubs in celebration of Robert Baden-Powell’s birthday and World Thinking Day for the Girl Guiding Organisation. Children in Year 4 decided to celebrate these important days by wearing their Cubs or Brownies uniforms to school. They presented to their classmates the importance of these days and what it meant to them.
Peter Pan-ners!

Over half term, some of our current and former Alveston children took part in the Peter Pan pantomime at the Tiddington Community Centre.  They were all fantastic and the show was brilliant! One of our Alveston parents had the pleasure of chaperoning our children and we are told that they all behaved so well backstage and gave it their all for every performance.

Jemima played the lead role of Peter Pan. Sarah, Oscar E and Finn played the 3 Darling children and Tilda played Tiger Lily. The other children played a mix of pirates, Lost Boys and members of the Never Land Army.

We wanted to congratulate all our Alveston children, both current and former, on not only a brilliant performance but also their 5 months of hard work in the run-up to Peter Pan. Fantastic work, everyone!

General Reminders

Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane, Oak Road or any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

Coronavirus within School
If your child tests positive for coronavirus, please keep them at home for three days or until they are better after three days. Please report all absences to the school office as below.

Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message.  You may also email parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday) nor for COVID absences.

Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer.  Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via parents3002@welearn365.com.
